Were you having cooling problems with the mechanical fan? The mechanical fan likely pulls more air than the electric fans and there is another issue affecting the cooling.

Honestly, I was looking for a reason to ditch the mechanical fan. Working properly it does pull some air and with the shroud, it does a good job.

My rescue '79 was reading above the 2/3rds temp mark with the AC during our hot AZ summer (above 105F/41C). The front pusher helper fan runs, so that wasn't an issue.
I found that the wiring connection to the water temp sensor on the engine was corroded. After replacing the connectors and cleaning the sensor the reading shows about 20% cooler. Now with the AC on it reads just a bit below or at the 2/3rds mark and only goes a bit above that when sitting in traffic. Before the clean it would read just a needle's width below the red mark.
So, before you go doing major surgery, make sure that the gauge is reading as accurately as possible ... make sure the connections are CLEAN.
