Default AC condensor fan options?

When I got the AC working on my 79 I upgraded to a newer compressor and condensor form an 84 928.

The condensor fan is still the original style for the 79.

Are the later model fans better from a cooling perspective? Would I get better performance ( higher CFM's lower power pull etc) and engine cooling with the later stlye? Will they fit in my 79?

Thanks

Hi J,
I spent a lot of time on this a few years ago. I tried a number of aftermarket fans. They had spiral blades and seemed great. The problem was both reliability and power consumption. I eventually returned to the fan you have pictured. I did wire it to always be on when the a/c compressor is running. There are a number of options to control this fan, including electronic controllers, sensors with relays and others. There may be better products now but my experience with Zirgo was not good. The Spal fans probably draw too much current for your alternator.
Good luck,
Dave

Thanks Dave. Current fan runs when AC is on from temp switch on dryer and or off the temp switch on the radiator so sounds like I am okay on that front. I was hoping the later cars had a more effienct fan set up.

Hi Jim,
Are you running R12 or R134?

The later fans are slimmer and have more blades, not sure if they are more effective though. I have a couple sitting around the garage waiting for a new home. Not worth posting to you from oz though. I also did not have a good experience with Zirgo - have a double 11" Spal unit in now.
