Default HVAC Blower died

My HVAC Blower died I think, you just know it had to happen when the weather is hotter than ever. It does not blow at any fan speed or in the defrost position. To top it off I planned on doing a TSD rally this weekend with the wife as my navigater. (I know that might not be a good idea) With no AC she will not be happy so I need to get it fixed, asap. The AC sill works and at speed there is cold air out of the vents but it is barely blowing. I think it just movement related to pressure at the cowl because it stops when the car is not moving. I have been checking electrial connections and found nothing, I also replaced both the relay for the Defroster XXII and the relay for Fresh Air Blower XXI. Any thoughts as where to go now

Paul,

Follow the black wire harness from the fan motor to the 2 pin connector...unplug it and apply 12v to the lead (going to the fan) to verify if fan is bad....or not.

FYI, brown wire is ground.

Thanks guys, i applied power directly to the blower motor and is a no go. 31 years of service is not to bad, guess I should not complain. Looks like I need to source a motor Have to figure out if I want to go almost 600 for a new one or much less for a at a minimum 16 year old one used one. Looks like it will be less than fun changing it out. Taking the hood off looks like a two person job.

No need to remove the hood. You can drop the recirc box and blower through the footwell inside the car. This also gives you the opportunity to change the recirc flap vacuum pod and re-seal the recirc box to prevent water damage to the CE panel. Do a search here as there are a couple of write-ups.

Paul, check with Bruce Arnn in St. Louis, he has a replacement motor solution you may be able to use.

By the way, if this does not work for your model year, I have the old one from my car that you could try retrofitting, with or without the new motor.

I have used the Arnn kit in my '84 Euro. You have to modify the original blower housing a little bit, but it is very easy with a dremel. Having a new motor in there is nice. The reason for the mod is because the new motor is about .25-.50" longer than the original. The rest of the dimensions are the same. The top of the original housing is cut out, but Bruce has made an aluminum cap with gasket to reseal it. It is a good kit with good instructions.

Thanks guys, the arn kit sounds like the eay to go and way less expensive than a new blower unit.

Just noticed that you have a 1980 model. Make sure you have the newer style blower motor housing. The new motor will not work in the older one. He has info on his website on how to tell the difference.

So much for the simple solution of the Arnnworx blower motor, my 80 Euro has the oldstyle blower. looks like ai will be sourcing a used assembly.

Will a new motor & housing go into an '80? If so, then unless you are trying to stay original, just upgrade to the newer unit either with or without an Arnn motor installed.

The blower fan is fixed. Was not as bad as I thought, but then again Jay Kempf did most of the work. Lucky for me he will work for food and wine. Took maybe three hours in total and that included having to remove the unit after installing it because the lower screw would not go in to the housing. Turns out the hole on the blower unit had a screw in it. Should have checked, did not and paid the price. We removed it and back in it went back in no problem. The only real problem was installing the screw inside the blower. The design is terrible, no room to work inside the rubber connector, can't see what you are doing, and a mismatched set of angles for the screwdriver vs the screw path. At some point I will drill a hole in the housing in line with the screw and fill it with a rubber plug to make disassembly/assembly much easier.

to fit all of the blower screws its rather easy you need a long 1/4 in extension 1 universal joint wrapped in tape and some sticky putty like you use to seal the blower box put some sticky on the socket fit the screw then put the bolt where you want it.
the inner duct screw is easy simply push the top portion of the blower duct rubber down then insert the tool a drop light is handy then put the screw in the hole and tighten pull the boot back up into position
