Default what would you pay for 84 auto?

I was heading over to pic a up an 84 auto, to have as a parts car and maybe put in a crap can kind of race, the interior is complete but the pod is off and the seats are shot but the rest is above fair. the motor is complete and it was a running car with fresh belts, not sure if it will run now. paint is shot turning to powder, driver side door has a dent from a crowbar effort to open. it is a under 100k miles car, it has sat or years, complete car.

thoughts before I close on the deal

thanks

Noticed you moved yours recently in the driveway.

yep runs well got a few more issues, cam seal and valve cover, was hoping to take it to VIR this weekend to watch the time trials for grassroots motorsport, probably won't happen, got to replace head gasket in sons honda too. oh did you see how close that limb came, it was downed by the wind storm and almost totalled the 928, it broke in half and went on both sides of the car, how lucky was that.

I did see that.... that was close!
You moved it though, which increases your odd's of a branch falling on it.
Better of to leave it where it was.

good point but, there is an even bigger dead limb that ominously hangs over the old resting spot, it seems the more I have the trees trimmed the more limbs that die, it's now in the back, that means the doctor is in and servicing the next patient.

Well, let's see. Scrap value for an Alum car is around $350. So, if you pay anymore than that, you've decided that the car is worth more than scrap. Deduct the cost of trasport @ $100, and it's worth around $250-300.

If it's sat outside for years in our climate without moving, its pure junk.

I hate to sound like a HS drama coach but - what's your motivation here?

And put your location in your info.

well I am a sucker for saving a car from scrap if it has any value, I will sometimes turn them into racecars, or part them out. I will fix them up for a few more years of driving if possible. Some people rescue dogs or cats, I rescue porsches and the odd ball car. Latest saves were 2 suzuki samurais, before that an acura integra, lots of 914s, 924S, usually can make my money back pretty easy, and have the fun of driving something different. Craigslist is an addiction, looking for a 12 step program.

Excellent. Welcome to the shark tank I guess. The 78-80 and 85-90 are more worth saving.
<Edit: 5 speeds are also more worth saving, pretty obvious.>

well thanks, the jury is still out on the 84 as of now, I just hate the thought of watching a 928 go to scrap when I could use a parts car to pick thru for my 82 which is in just so so shape. also thought about putting in grassroots 2011 car challenge, it would be neat to see one make the challenge, decisions decisions

Not enough details to say whether you should walk away or pay $400, but parting a US 84 isn't much of a money tree.

OTOH 84 AT is about the cheapest 928 to own, and a model I often recommend to people who want a reliable, potentially nice looking, but a bit on the lame side performing 928. Totally stripped gets the weight down enough to make it fun on the track, but cars that have been sitting usually have long lists of issues so putting it into driving condition could be expensive.
