Default All my 134a leaked out

So after 3 years (without a loss of any refrigerant or cooling capacity) my aux fan came on and stayed on when the key was turned on. Diagnosed to failed temp switch, replaced it, and over the winter all my refrigerant has leaked out. This is the only refrigerant dependent AC part I have replaced.

I did not see an o-ring, or the remnants thereof, on the old switch. However, there was a red film, seeming like a red locktite film, on the old switch threads and base. I did not apply anything to the new switch - should I have? Today I went and got a small 134a compatible o-ring for the new switch (78 cents). I suspect re-installing the new switch with the o-ring will require a complete mash down of the o ring, and wondering if this would be at all effective.

What do you think? Use the o-ring or hit the threads of the switch with red locktite, or some other sealant, before I evacuate and recharge?

As always, any and all thoughts appreciated...

Are you talking the temp switch or pressure switch? I just replaced the pressure switch on my 85, which should be the same as your 86. There should be an o-ring installed. There is a slight recess in the drier where it threads in. The temp switch I don't believe actually makes it to the freon. It only threads into the housing and picks up the temp from it, not the actual refrigerant.

I am talking the temp switch. If no freon contact by the switch (can't really tell from where it screws into the tube) then I have another coincidental issue somewhere. I thought I heard a "psst" briefly when I disconnected the old switch, but could be wrong.
