Lost 1st gear kickdown
My shop made minor adjustments to the transmission a couple of months back, and it has maybe led to some interesting behavior with the shifting of my S4.
The first thing I noticed (besides smoother shifting) was that it would more readily start out in 1st gear. WOT is not needed anymore, just push the gas deeper and it will go to 1st. This doesn't bother me at all, but I wondered about it.
Lately I noticed, though, that it will not kick down to 1st at reasonable speeds where it should (30 mph). This is the same even with the PKS switched on. The kickdown generally seems to be working, since it will kick to 2nd at 60 mph, and it will kickdown to 1st at WOT going 30-40 mph if I manually select '2'.
Any ideas about the loss of 1st gear kickdown in position 'D' only?
Thanks,
Sean

With the car in a quiet area and next to a wall, roll the windows down, turn the ignition switch on (do not crank the engine), and press the throttle pedal to the floor. There should be an audible "click" from the transmission area. If there is no click, there will be no kickdown.

OK well, I confirmed that the kickdown switch is operating, and the transmission makes a "click" sound as Wally described. So I am back to square one (familiar place for 928 owners), figuring out why she will kick to 1st gear in position '2' but not 'D'.
I will let everyone know if I figure this out.

I would look at the tension on the transmission cable on the Throttle Body. Minor tweaks can dramatically change shift points and tendencies in kicking into a lower gear and hanging on to a gear. I used Wally's recommendations posted on another thread and after several iterations I got things working the way I wanted.

your sig says "working on mystery rattle", mine was the "horn bracket" that somehow supports the right fender. Apparently these are commonly broken, and can either be welded fixed or just tied down and not fixed.
