Default Driving without belts.

If a 16 valve were to throw all of it's belts, but not the timing belt, would it be safe to drive it 5 to 10 miles?

Yes you can drive it until the battery goes flat which takes quite a while.....carry a spare battery and go even farther !

Thank you, that's what I thought. I'll keep the speed high enogh for air flow though the radiator, keep an eye on the temp guage and drive it home the 7 miles from where I left it.

I drove the wife's 79 about 40 miles with no fan/smog belt and it was fine at speed.

Steering is a no issue. Once you are rolling faster than 10km/h you won't even notice it. I've been driving without a "5 belt for two seasons.

Not sure why this happened, but it did. Maybe it has something to do with driving for six years without checking them!

Anyway, it's home now! I left it there yesterday because one of the trashed belts "tied itself in a knot" around the crank pully and I didn't want it flying apart and causing damage to something.

Today I cut the remaining belt parts away and drove it home without issue.

Had the car out again today without belts. Third day without belts. I must say that I am impressed!!!

Feels like there is more power!! How much HP do those accessories consume?

Temp rose a bit under 40 MPH but at 50 and above it is fine. You can even shift at red line and temps are normal.

While running lower RPMs, I learned that my electric fan does turn on and temp stays up a bit, but needle never went past the top white hash mark.

Once back to speed, it drops quickly.

Stearing is "Armstrong" under 30 but gets better the faster you go. Above 50 it is no problem!

If it weren't for a "full battery" I think I'd leave it this way!

I do have all the new belts and will eventually replace them.

Just thought I'd share my experience!

Good work! If you want to keep driving the car, the bare minimum will be the alternator belt. Then the second most inportant is the fan belt. The AC and PS are optional.

Car has been driven every day since the belts "blew" and new ones are finally going on today. AC belt will not be replaced. Alt belt is on. But, what is this all about?

I have no idea how long that has been there. I'm guessing it was like that when I got it. That was 1-14-05 and I don't remember any "event" that could have caused that.

Should I even worry about it?

Those are caused by using a very large set of channel locks to hold the pulley while they turn the crank bolt......either did not have the flywheel lock tool or did not want to go under the car to use it......

Wow, am I glad I replaced the whole bunch a few months ago.

The 928 has pretty solid timing belt covers, but I have seen other cars break serpentine or v-belt and taking the timing belt along with it.

When I was replacing my belts I also took the car out for a drive with only the alternator belt connected, felt more powerfull and got rid of the stupid sound of the fan.

I really recommend converting the belt-fan to electric, if only it was for the sound the belt fan produces.
The "whooooggghh'" sound it makes when revving the engine reminds me of old mercedeses. :-)

Cheers
