Default Repaired "Seat Rails"

Yes, Porsche calls them seat rails. ACS in Reisterstown, MD did the work; they're Mercedes specialists and they have an awesome facility. Super nice people to boot. Pricier than other body shops, but you get what you typically pay for when it comes to body work.

They cut small access holes through the inside floor, pushed the rails down from the top, and then welded the floor pieces back in. They coated the rails with a special undercoating as well; I think they look amazing.

Below is the before and after shots.

I hope you revise your title to "salvage" now, after all that "frame" damage

(for those that don't know, do a search)

Great fix; looks good. Question, why did you go through with that repair? It is non-structural.

The rails looked like crap before (see photos!) and I didn't want to get that close to a sale again and be denied when someone who's not 928-savvy (or unibody savvy for that matter) sees that and runs off.

The shop owners and I talked at length about the rails and whether to bother. They were super honest with me (and have earned future business as a result) and one of them put it to me this way: if it were his car, he wouldn't bother. He'd have no trouble driving his family around in it, too. But if he were selling it, he'd fix it, if only for appearances sake. This dude is a frame & unibody expert.

I see a new thread: "Nobody knows but me: improvements that I have made and will not recover financially." Wait. That started when I bought the damn thing. Or

"It's Not Rational, but I'm doing it anyway."

"Something is wrong, the seat rails are too nice, I bet it's been wrecked."

Too funny Steve! I felt a bit irrational about the whole thing, and you're right, they're almost too nice. A bit less obvious than the red boxes I saw before, though.

Ultimately just another reason for me to keep the car. It's still insanely fun to drive. I'm in no rush to sell, either, though my 85 year old house has a 1.75 car garage into which I'm squeezing both 928s. These u-boats need a wide berth.
