When Porsche 928 S4 was the fastest production car in the world, who beat it?

So many people talk about the "feel" of their car and how it performs against other cars. Here's the guy who should know, Anantole Tony Lapine;
“Give us credit that we learned a bit during the 20 or so years that we built the rear engine sports car and we had a few ideas how to improve on it. That's why 911 drivers don't like the 928, it doesn't feel like it’s handling properly because the onset of all the bad habits of the 911 are pushed much higher up the overall performance curve. It is very hard to make it do the bad things a 911 chassis will do and so it’s perceived to be sluggish or heavy. In fact if you look at the speedo or tach you are actually eating up the terrain at a much higher level with more confidence. That was our goal. "

All 1989-1991 944 Turbo's have the same specifications as the 1988 Turbo S.
As much as I love the 928's you have to give credit where it's due, and that is Mark's talent behind the wheel.
Put him in anything competitive and he's going to be in the front pack.
There are a handful of 911's that are regulars at Road America with an average lap time 3-4 seconds faster than Mark's lap record. He doesn't always run with their group when he comes to Elkhart Lake.

This is a great video, I don't think there can be much argument about what you see. It's a banked 3.4 mile high speed test track in Japan and these pro drivers have the gas pegged to the floor and they record the results. Notice how the driver(s) talk about the stability at speed and lift and compare that to comments about the 928 at speed during it's test's.
Also compare these speeds to what the 928 did 20 years earlier at Nardo for 24 hours.
fantastic sound and clarity

I've noticed that the Pantera is mentioned, as the owner of both cars, 928 S4, and a highly modified 74 Pantera, Group 4 clone.
The Pantera, was already 13 years old when the S4 came out, and was only 10K new. My 87 cost 7 times that new. Both are very different cars!
FWIW, the Pantera is wicked fast, and in it's last configuration would blow the doors off anything Italy has offered in the past decade. But it's really just a big over powered GoKart. The 928 is a very comfortable touring coupe that cruises at 150+, and is reliable. Most Fcars or Lambos are maintance nightmares. I wouldn't trade either of my cars for a new Italian supercar.

Some top speed times
928S4 - ................................181.8 (one direction @Nardo)
Testarossa - .........................180
Countach (best) - ..................179
512 BB - ...............................176
Ferrari 360 CS........................174.5 (one direction @Yatabe)
Daytona - ..............................174
Lambo Gallardo E-gear...........172.7 (yatabe)
Lambo Miura S - ....................172
2004 Porsche 996 GT3CS........172 (yatabe)
AM V8 - ..(1987).....................170
Ferrari 360 Modena................165.5 (yatabe)
928S2 - .................................165+ #(161mph for 24 hours on track @Nardo)
BMW M3 CSL..........................164 (yatabe)
Acura NSX-R ..........................164 (yatabe)
87' 911 Turbo ........................162
Lotus Espirit - ........................152
Detomaso Pantera..................150+
If my 20 year old at the time 1985 928 S2 had been tested at Yatabe in 2005, it would have tied for 2nd place in top speed and done so as the most stable. How do I know? I have driven it at 160 with more to go and it was no different than driving it at 75. That's the quality of the design and construction of the 928 showing itself. The 928 out handles the 911 as shown in the other Best Motoring video where the auto S4 beats the standard 964 with ease. Anyone who thinks their 928 is slow or can't hold the road has a car with mechanical issues or does not know how to drive.
