Default remove oil pressure sender

HI friends.

Yesterday my onboard dashboard flash in red a warning message "oil pressure insufficient", but the gauge displays the pressure ok (between 2 and 5 bar, with rpm and hot oil). I have measured between the sender plugs and the pressure switch stays closed althought the motor is off. I suposse that the sender part of warning swith is broken.......Now the questions.

I am looking for this problem at the forum, but I must be a little fool.......How replace the oil pressure sender?.......yes, I suposse but, I will be empty all the oil before, isn't it?. ........is there some repair of the sender.....or it is sealed?.

Thank you very much

Sneder is a cheap part.

Remove by turning Counter Clockwise. I don't remember what size wrench is needed.

The new sender should come with a new crush ring. Don't forget to use it.

You shouldn't lose much oil at all, as there is no presuure when the car isn't running. But have a rag handy to catch the ounce or two that could dribble out.

I forgot the exact size of the wrench needed, but what typically happens is the sender unscrews with the part that threads into the block...which is fine and gives you an excuse to changed the oil thermo springs which can fatigue over time and cause low pressure.....

Once the assembly is off its much easier to separate the sender from the adapter

to remove the sender first jack up the car,
disconnect the battery, remove the oil filter dont let it tip over it holds litre, you will be putting it back on.
Remove the lower and upper radiator shroud, Remove the bolts that hold the alternator on and drop it down and hang it from a piece of coat hanger or mechanics wire.
NOTE dont let alternator hang from the harness it can shear the blue wire inside the orange sheath,

Get either a 27 or 24 MM open end wrench and unscrew the sender after removing the wires,

Note as previously mentioned the housing may also come out with the sender so it would be wise to replace the spring and thermostat if there is one installed on your car
refit in same order as disassembly

Default Oil Pressure Sending unit removal

Is removing the oil filter and loosening the alternator required to replace the oil sending unit?
Would a pair of vice grips, sufficiently tight but not too tight allow one to unscrew the prior oil sending unit to be replaced with a new one?
what are the torque specs for the unit? With the crush washer would just securely tightening the new unit on be sufficient?

Removing the filter is almost mandatory. The 24 mm open end wrench for the sender (as well as the 27 MM which holds the receiving female portion of the threaded connection - mounted on the engine) should be a stubby wrench. Not a lot of torque required to remove it, but the proper wrenches REALLY help. I think I got the stubby 24 and 27 mm on Amazon.

Absolutely no need to remove the alternator. Use the 2 wrenches as Gary said. You may need to grind one down to a more narrow surface in order to fit. I gust unscrewed the whole thing from the block and then disassembled on the work bench. Easy job.

NOTE I cant update my previous post from 2011 ,
here are new instructions due to using different tools.

Buy a 27 MM and 24 MM crows foot from amazon,
then you will have to slice one in half so they will fit .
I used a cut off wheel .

NOTE then you need two ratchets with extensions ,
you dont need to remove the oil filter
But alternator belt removal so you can push it to the side is a good idea
the sender will leak out about 3 OZ of oil so have a small pan handy.

Tighten enough so the you can feel the crush ring smoosh,
put a dab of PTFE pipe sealant on the sender threads .

Make sure to tighten the 27 mm adapter before you fit the new sender.

Stan - it is to me a much quicker and easier job to simply unscrew the oil filter than to remove the alt belt. That whole alternator apparatus is a huge PIA and these belts are not easy to get on and off. YMMV.

Also, remove the sender and the mounting piece that screws into the block, then clean the spring and the different pieces. Just pay attention to how they fit together. Not hard or fiddly, but all very straightforward.

Once I used the 2 crows foot wrenches it was super fast to take the sender out,
its a bit fiddly with two ratchets but beyond that.

I even made a 24MM open end wrench and heated and bent the end to about a 90 degree to fit the sender .
The crows feet work great for the limited swing that a wrench needs

I would not remove the adapter that the sender screws into,
as the possibility exists of mixing the parts or somehow causing an issue by opening up this area .YMMV

However work at your own pace and with the tools that you have.
Neither way is the best way or the worst way just different.
