Power steering leak

Thanks Steve.
Pretty much all the flexible lines will get replaced. Roger's kit is on my list.
Laugh is that the PO had the steering pump resealed 2 years ago - it now has a major function in rust prevention and alternator lubrication.

I rechecked the leak and it is coming from the pump to rack pipe. It it leaking from the metal pipe to rubber connection close to the steering pump.Looking at the pipe it looks pretty new, even had a Porsche paper label attached. When I checked previous PO service records it been changed 4 years ago (20k miles) by Porsche dealer...
I'm taking it to a hose rebuilder tomorrow recommended from a good friend who works in the auto parts business and has sent many happy customers to them. After doing a number of searches here, there seems to be a split on whether to repair/rebuild or replace the hose. I'm trying the repair/rebuild route to save cost. I'll post the results here too for future searches.

Hose is now with Pirtek. They cant replace restrictor, so going to try without. They are going to cut the metal pipes either side of the rubber hose and attach swivel fittings to ensure alignment can be corrected.
Major headache I had getting out old pipe was near the LHS engine mount. may try jacking engine a little to give more room on reassembly

I'm having the same issue/leak, but in my LHD version. I'm VERY frustrated too that the hose has been replaced before (with Porsche hose, at least the fittings are stamped with the Porsche triangle logo and 928 part no.) and is now leaking. ALTHOUGH, the hose was replaced 8-1/2 years and 50k miles ago, I would have hoped it would have lasted as long as the original at over 12 years and 113k miles. Maybe I'm expecting too much? I'm sure I wouldn't be as frustrated if the hose didn't cost around $200!!! OK, rant over...

Might be worth the phone call to GB. He has a little hose business going on the side, mostly for race and extreme-performance stuff. You've seen a few examples of his on Rob's car pictures I'm sure. For hoses that are risky when they leak, a chore to R&R, or cause a serious mess if/when they fail, you could do worse than having a better hose fab'd for the application.

The hose clip in the picture doesnt look right to me - that looks like the inlet from the reservoir, not the high pressure outlet.
I replaced mine a couple of years ago, also RHD, for a weep at the metal->hose crimp on the shock tower. Problem 1 was getting the tube nut out of the pump - had to remove alternator so I remove pump before I could unjam that nut. Problem 2 was getting the hose out past the mounting ear on the cross member. I had my hose rebuilt by a local hose place, and had no issues with orientation of ends - a turning crimped end will NOT necessarily leak, I am repeatedly advised , and we are in the hose business. I have had the engine and tranny cooler and AC hoses rebuilt by the same people, and have had zero leaks from any of them in several years so far. The rebuilder also moved the external restrictor to the new hose, and I never noticed any change in behaviour - I suspect its related to pressure surges.

We'll see how it holds up, but I would highly recommend them from what I've seen so far.

See attached. Picked up my refurbed high pressure hose from Pirtek. It was a one hour turnaround and cost £20.
I started the reassembly from underneath. I managed to route pipe quite quickly and easily BUT I had to remove the starter motor ( electrics had to be disconnected anyway to get pipe out.) Once starter was out rerouting was relatively easy. Rain stopped play today but will try and finish tomorrow and test for leaks and difference without restrictor

COmpleted steering hose replacement. All well with no leaks. Have been driving it for a couple of days and cannot notice any difference without restrictor

thanks for updating Steve.
Good to know about the swivel fittings. The pipe from my trans to the cooler was twisted by the "pros" that installed a replacement gearbox for the PO. Cutting off some of the twisted pipe and using a swivel fitting will give back a bit length and remove pipe-hose alignment worries.
Cheers
