Auto Trans experts, question, advice.
I've been experiencing some slippage and somewhat abrupt gear engagements at times. Sometimes at part-throttle the engine speed will increase without any attendant increase in speed, unless I give the engine more gas & the transmission gently 'clunks' and engages.
I drained the fluid and removed the pan yesterday. The fluid was slightly dirty, still red but I found some dark gray/black residue in the bottom of the pan and reservoir.

Most interesting find was in the diagram linked above...
I found spring #17 hanging loose with the end that is supposed to go to #2 Regulating Valve broken off.
I removed the spring, straightened out one coil, looped the end & re-installed the spring.
I know this could not have been doing the transmission any good while in this state but am wondering if this broken spring could have been responsible for the symptoms mentioned above?
If not, any ideas on what the problem may be?
Thanks!

Don't know about the spriong and I'm far from an expert, but these tranny's are very sensitive to fluid levels.
My auto was slipping a few years back. Believe it or not a pan drop, filter, and syntehic M1 plus a bottle of Tan-X fised it. Several years and thousands of mile later no slip and no leak.
Alos, Bill Ball migh have a few tips.
