Default Cool New TOOL

As I mentioned at SITM, I figured it was time to upgrade my PC Based oscope.

It showed up yesterday! This thing is cool!!!

Here's a cap of the software that came with it - freeware, of course.

I'll be bringing it to the get together in July in VA if anyone needs some troubleshooting!

Fraggle, Fraggle, Fraggle... It's a TOOL! Toooool, , not a "toy".
Toys are for kids

It is definitely cool, though! Did you buy it direct from Syscomp?

And it was great seeing you and the family again in NC!

20 MHz Portable scope + signal generator, pretty cool. How do you plan to use it on the shark?

On the later cars especially there are a number of ignition and fuel-related signals that can be checked with a scope: crank-position sensor, hall sensor, injector pulses, ignition drive signals, etc. This is part of the WSM diagnosis starting on page D24-9 (part of the group 24/28 "D" pages added for 87+ cars).

An example: A few of us were trying to diagnose Matt's non-starting car at SITM, everything checked out except there was no tach signal from EZK to LH, to tell it to run the fuel-pump. Even jumpered, with fuel pressure, there were still no injector pulses (checked with a test-light), and no start. CPS checked out OK with an ohmmeter, around 1K ohms (same as a suspected-good one). Earl grabbed DR's fancy Tek scope and verified no tach signal coming out of the EZK. The CPS input signal was there but only around 1v peak-to-peak (IIRC), WSM wants >3v (pg D 28-11). No one had another CPS that could be swapped in, so I don't know how it turned out but that was the likely culprit.

Of course a complete intake refresh (all-new hoses & sensors, new Hall/CPS/ISV, etc) would likely have resolved it, but the cost there can run into multiple thousands. Sometimes being able to pinpoint the problem can save a lot of grief (and $$), and the WSM is remarkably helpful in this regard.

Cheers,

You're right Jim - thread title updated.

This one also has 8 digital IO's you can wire in for monitoring. WOT, IDLE, relays, etc can be monitored from the same page.

I bought it from http://www.saelig.com/ They've got all sorts of cool toy err TOOLS on there.

Cool, good to know. I've got a couple of nice Tek and Agilent scopes down in my workshop. It looks like this tool would be more portable and practical for in car diagnostics than my 'portable' scopes which aren't really very portable at all.

BTW. Something like this might make a good choice for a portable scope as well:

I didn't realize it until I just checked, but prices have really come down, probably due to all the good PC based options available today. It looks like you can pick up a TDS 210 for about $300 these days.

This setup was around $220, including a couple of probes. A few years back I used a parallel port based single channel scope to debug my car, it was invaluable! But it became obsolete when my next laptop didn't have a parallel port!! This new system should be a lot more versatile.

That value is tough to beat. Do you think there will be any use for the signal generator function in the 928?

Not sure but if I can dupe the CPS signal I can debug my non functioning tach on the bench. I'll bet I can rig something to test injectors or something too.

I'm always thinking of cool projects for my daughter when she gets further into elementary school. Right now she's only 6 so the electronics and such is a little light, but we did put together a solar powered fan yesterday and she knows that the solar cell turns light into a "battery", and if you plug the DC motor in the other way it turns the fan the other way. The signal generator will be useful for stuff like this!
