Default Plastic - Acetone & Beer

I was scoping out my weekend tasks of replacing EFI Fuel Line and Vacuum Line replacements and decided to sparkle up "stuff" under the hood while getting a lay of the land. Not sure if the Acetone fumes or beer inspired me but I started cleaning more stuff than I planned. After cleaning lots of stuff, I dropped the Oil Filler Cap on the floor and suddenly wondered if my cleaning technique might in fact be making the plastic parts more brittle on my already aging Shark.

Are there any who could weigh in on the best way to keep plastics healthy?

I use hot water a tooth brush with simple green,
keep the acetone away from everything it will melt plastic and take the shine off of the intake and cam covers

+1 ... I only ever use solvents of any description on plastic or paint knowing there will be the downside of some degradation/loss of thickness of the material/coating.
