i have had the 82 928s for 6 years now, sons car, driven summer and weekends, started having a oil drip problem behind ac compressor last year, couldn't tell where it was coming from, so a few days ago i pulled the compressor off and bracket on side of engine off, a piece of the engine block where the front lower bolt is above corner of oil pan came off with bolt, behind the bracket is a patched up area that looks like liquid steel, it looks like the po hit something that took out the ac compressor and cracked the area where bracket bolts up, the patched up area is above oil pan, so what would be a good product to use again, liguid steel, jb weld or something else, no plans on pulling engine

Steve, the car referenced in Dave's pointer is still on the road running strong. If you have access to a skilled welder, this is very much worth a try.

Steve, the work required to fix mine was quite a bit more extensive, so the pan would have had to come off [even though it was already off]. The more "stuff" that comes off, the more room you have to work. If you decide to do any welding, I would think that the pan would need to come off. If you use a commercial pookie to build a new patch, you might be able to squeeze by with it in place. The best advice though is clean clean clean clean... then clean some more before you even attempt to fix it.
