Default The weird of 928 hatch release

Ok.. So I am new to th 928 forum, and have recently acquired an 87 928S4 5 sp in pretty decent shape. I'll post a few pics of this beast when I get an opportunity. From what I can gather older 928's develop a number of electrical gremlins. Or maybe they all Do .. LOL I Am in the process of going through the car and fixing anything that is not working. I just did some trouble shooting on the rear wiper. Fried relay (took it apart the contacts were completely burnt off) and onto the hatch release.

Now the hatch closes and I can open it np with a key. I tested the hatch motor and it is working fine. When the hatch is open and a door open and I pull the release the motor whirrs and does its thing. When the hatch is closed and a door open and I pull the release .. Nada.. no motor whirring. So hmm whats going on. I see the white plastic plunger in the release and I manually push it down half way and have someone pull the release . and the motor starts. Push the plunger all the way down and pull the release . .no motor. So I can only assume that the switch at the bottom of the plunger is somehow telling the motor not to engage (Hatch closed ). Does not make sense to me.

I went through all of the wiper threads and did not find anything related to this exact problem.. Can anyone help? Is this an adjustment issue? or electrical.

Thanks everyone

The switch at the bottom ONLY turns on the interior lights by providing a ground. The motor (like a wiper motor) has a "park" position so it stops in the correct place every time. My guess is that is screwed up.

First question - Do the interior lights work as designed? That is, do the interior lights come on when you open the door, and go off shortly after you close the door?

If not, you need to fix the switched ground circuit that operates the interior lights and enables the hatch release system. Check and clean the door switches, and find why the brown/white stripe wires are not being grounded when the door is opened.

If the red lights in the back edges of the doors are staying on all the time, the battery will run down in a few days.

Wally has it right...the interior light switches on the doors must work so the hatch motor KNOWS the door is open and it is safe to open the hatch. Now when the hatch is open the switch on the bottom of the hatch receiver is saying it is OK to cycle the motor....

Well .. The interior lights are working. When either driver or passengers door open the lights come on. The motor seems to cycle just fine when the hatch is open. I can pull the release and it goes thru a complete revolution. When the hatch is closed nothing. I am probably going to have to see if power is getting to the motor when the hatch is closed and I pull the release. That should point me in the right direction.
