Default Round Clock Console Surround Trim on OB to Replace Rectangular Trim w/ Rear AC

I am looking to throw an AFR gauge into my center console surround to replace my digital clock which is dying. I see OB cars had the round clocks in their shifter surrounds, and some had buttons/switches next to the clock. If I were to pick up the surround with the two buttons on each side of the round clock hole, will those two holes work for my rear AC *****?

Unlikely, but you'd have to measure to be sure.

The AC buttons need a specific diameter of holes, and thickness of material. You need to find out the exact measurements of these holes, and the thickness of the material in that area of the old trim piece - best would be, if we had some pictures of what the back looks like.

I am now officially looking for this part thanks to seeing a picture of Rixter's 928.

I don't think that is an early surround in Rixter's car. Rather, I think it is a Hookedoncars.com analogue clock conversion found here http://marketplaceadvisor.channeladv...75&i=213259846. I am sure Nicole could enlighten.

Here is the Jager clock kit. Note the 2-piece trim used versus Rixter's console surround.

Regardless, I can get it to work. I have some ideas.

That green console shown is not rixter's car. He probably wishes he had that one...

Here is the car - a 94 GTS with all kinds of Exclusive options.

Its exclusive options cost about as much as Mongo's 928 is worth today.

Those wood console pieces are hard to come-by. They are solid wood, have a tendency to warp or crack their surface, and were not installed in many US models.

They are totally different from the trim in the early cars. Even the clock is different - it's a 924S clock.

It would be really nice to get some sort of factory brochure or paperwork on what Porsche had to offer as far as exclusive options. That sure is a nice GTS in that link!

Looking at the '79 console surround it looks like I will have to modify it somewhat. The trim appears to continue up the console and terminate at the top air vent. There is no angle at the bottom of the surround just above where the ashtray would sit in the main center console.

At worst case scenario, I can find a 1980-1981 console surround with only one round hole for the clock, then measure to drill my own holes to mount the rear AC ***** to it.

Another alternative would be to chop up one of these one or 3-hole consoles and cut out the rectangular clock area on mine. I can insert the replacement piece (round clock trim) into the area I cut out. I would have to support the back side of it though. Perhaps I can do it with modeler's plastic, which can be purchased at a hobby store. I can then epoxy the backing plate to the back of the console and fill in the cracks showing in the areas I cut out. The end result though will be having to wrap that entire console surround in vinyl again. I am not worried about this and can do it myself.

Looks like I am out looking for an surround from a 1981 or 1982 car. Part number is 928 552 047 05

I will drill my own holes for the rear AC buttons using my S4 console surround as a template.

Carlos,

That is the seat belt warning light.

The one piece surrond is a pain as they are hard to come by and most have some degree of warp. I have been looking at trying to use the upper piece from later cars but would have to cut the current one as well as there appear to be some diffeences in the component mount points in the center console under the trim.

I've been looking for an un-warped OB piece like that for two years. If you find one please DONT cut it. I'll pay a lot for one.

Excellent - thank you! I kept seeing it on OB's, but never knew what it was.

If I could replicate the look somehow, I thought it would be a cool place for a retro-fitted knock sensor light

Here is what the PET for 78-82 (left image and first set of text) and 83-86 (right image and second set of text) has to say about the center trim. Looks like there are two different part numbers for 78-82, with the break occurring between 79 and 80. Then, for 83-86, several part numbers depending on leather vs. leatherette, with another difference seemingly dependent on it being 85-86? In the 83-86 PET, the noted M570 option is "Air Conditioner with Improved Efficiency", which I believe is the Rear A/C option, and so the rear A/C ***** need to be accommodated. (Sorry for the fuzzy cut-n-paste images!)
