In conclusion to my saga, the driver's side gate guide (928 564 046 42) had failed. A plastic slide pressed onto the guide itself had cracked, causing the guide to bind. Luckily I had a spare on my parts car and was able to swap it in and get the sunroof working this afternoon.
I wish I hadn't spent 3 days fiddling around with all the adjustment screws before deciding to tear it completely down. The biggest problem I have with these cars is not understanding how they're *supposed* to work, and assuming I just must be doing something wrong. The car won again
