In a few months, I'll be tackling an audio upgrade for my car. My Alpine amp was damaged by water intrusion into my car during last years heavy rainstorms while sitting outside. I'm not aiming for absolute perfect sound and bass here, but something that does sound rather nice to the ears. Even my fiancee's Jetta with the Monsoon sound system option sounds good to me (and that is NOT a high end system)
I have opted to go back to Blaupunkt for my car since I already have a MP3/CD head unit. The car is already wired for a 4-channel amp, which I'll be switching to Blaupunkt as well. My speakers though are old Infinity Reference that are a 2-way 5 1/4" non-component for the fronts. I intend to return the car back to a component setup on the doors with a 5 1/4" woofer. The rears behind the seats will remain 6 1/2" rounds, but Blaupunkt brand.
For the rear quarters in the hatch, I want to upgrade from the 5 1/4" Infinity speakers to something bigger. I am looking at 5x7 or 6x9 speakers that could fit in that area with a little reinforcement of the panel for added integrity. Has anyone managed to squeeze these larger speakers back there? I am also not worried about beating these panels up since they warped already from the sun. They aren't in too bad condition though and I may do some sort of repair procedure that I have seen on Rennlist in earlier threads.
Midwest Electronics (www.midwestelectronics.com) has some super deals for Blaupunkt car audio equipment. I will most likely go through them.

round speakers are generally considered better sound quality than ovals, just FYI.. 5.25 should be ample. If really want to go bigger could go with 6.5"

My recommendation is to fix that water leak before investing in a new sound system, Andrew.
Then install a subwoofer in the spare wheel well.
No need to go with larger speakers unless you are going for the ricer look.

Who says I didn't fix it already? I will retain the 5 1/4s in the rear. I am also going to relocate the amp somewhere since that is a lot of weight on the shelf under the glovebox.

I have a garage now and had time to take care of it. I had more leaves in there than my front porch during a Santa Ana.
