Default Need help choosing tires...

Hi guys,

Just bought Strosek wheels from Greg. Now comes the interesting part of choosing the tires. Going by what Greg suggested, I'll be putting 225/45-17 on the fronts and 275/40-17 on the back. Tire Rack gives me following options:

Bridgestone Potenza RE760 Sport - $616
Continental ExtremeContact DW - $604
Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105 - $442
Kumho Ecsta XS - $636
Kumho Ecsta ASX - $472
Sumitomo HTR Z III - $540

Car is driven spring through fall only and mostly in good weather (I'm not taking it out in the rain unless I really have to, that happened only once so far).

What would you guys recommend?

Thank You!

Alexei

Continental ExtremeContact DW - $604

Highest rated tire on Tirerack plus I love the ExtremeContact DWS tires I bought for the Mercedes.

I've always liked the Bridgestone RE series, (RE730 was an awesome tire). The latest, the RE760 is supposed to be a great tire, haven't purchased any yet.

I just posted a recomendation for those Conti's you have on your list. I would buy them hands down.
Its a great tire and although I have them on my X5 which is a SUV, this X5 was a rare 4.8is and was supposed to be BMW's first "M" SUV. It has the M suspension, instruments, etc etc. Its a hot SUV and out performed the Cayenne of the same era. So it needed a GOOD performance. Hell it has 315's on the back and 255s on the front on 20" rims, and it takes off like a rocket for an SUV. The Michilen Diamaris were supposed to be the "HIGH PERFORMANCE" SUV tire and this Conti out performs it in every way. Ride comfort and performance.
Like I said I am considering it to replace the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's on my Carrera S.

And the price is fanstastic.

This is not a daily driver - I drive it only for enjoyment and as such, only in good weather. And no, I do not usually push the car hard - I've been to around 90-100 a couple of times, but most of the time I stay within 10mph over the posted speed limit.

Cheers!

235-45-17 with 275-40-17 will give you almost identical rolling diameters front & rear. I have these on my car & they match well.
My tires are not on your list so can't comment.

I found that the larger profile of the 235's almost brought the speedo into line as well (1990 s4).

ok.....then no sense on spending large money, I'd put on the cheapset set the correctly fit the rims.

I spend mega $$$ on tyres but I drive it to the max

I have Hankook V12's and am extremely happy with them. They steer very easy at low speeds, are compliant over tar strips, and actually do OK at the track if you do not surprise them. And they are by far the QUIETEST tires I have ever run.

There's a thread about them somewhere here. And they are cheap, too.

Alexei,

What are the rim widths, front and rear? I am thinking that you will be happier with 225/45-17 fronts and 255/40-17 rears (rather than 275), for balance.

+1 on the Sumi's, very nice tires at a great price. The only drawback is a tendency to hydroplane at higher speeds (well over 70, where legal of course). So the Conti DW's might be a better choice for areas that get really wet.

The Conti DW's are well-rated, but I haven't seen many reports on their use on 928's. Not that SUV reports aren't relevant, but let's just say they are less than compelling.

At the moment we have Sumi's on the GT, with about 20K experience (on the second set), very happy with them other than a small concern with the hydroplane issue.
The S4 has Dunlop Dizzy star-spec's which cost a bit more, but arguably the best tire for dry traction-- very happy with them also. Wet-weather performance is an unknown however. The Sumi's ride a bit quieter so we'll probably take them to SITM.
And the GTS currently has PS2's, great tires except for the price.

All are 225/45-17 & 255/40-17, the GT and S4 both handle very neutral with Eibach/Bilstein's and Ott-links on the rear swaybar (without, the car feels heavy with just a bit of push).

Good hunting!

OK, 8" front and 9" rear widths, that's in the middle of the spec'ed rim widths for 225/45-17 fronts and 255/40-17 rears.
Those are also the stock GTS tire sizes and appear to have good availability.

You could also do 235/45 fronts and 265/40 rears, but fewer choices for the rears.

Cheers,

Since you're not looking for an "all season' tire, I'd take a look at the Bridgestone RE-11 (you can order them through Costco) or the Dunlop Direnze Star Spec (not sure of the exact name).

Two of the stickiest tires on the market - but still have decent wear ratings.

James
