Wanted: dead speedometer/odometer
My odometer has decided to quit working, and I'm in no mood to replace the gears. Instead, I'd like to rip out all the mechanical odometer bits and install a digital display, driven by a little embedded controller. My goal is that the digits be approximately the same size and will be visible through the same window. This is the sort of device I have in mind (I've got a whole bunch of 'em in my junk-box)...

I might put a 4-digit version in the trip window, or I might just have the larger display serve both functions (e.g., press the trip reset once to display the trip contents for a couple of seconds; hold the button in for 5 seconds to reset the trip). I might get creative and drive the speedometer from a D/A converter, opening up all sorts of possibilities.
Anyway...I don't want to remove the (still working) speedometer from my car while I prototype this, so I'm looking for a non-working one. It can be in any condition, short of having been run over by a truck. And it should be free or super-cheap. I'll pay for shipping, of course.
Anyone got one they'd like to get rid of?
Ian

What's a hobbs meter? My odo died recently and my shop wants to send my whole pod over to Palo Alto speedometer where they will take weeks to fix it. Awesome, no. So I'm skipping this repair for now.
But is there some other way to keep track of the miles?
