Put the S4 motor complete in the 86. Changing the block only - if possible - gives you nothing. You will still have the flat spot below 3000 RPMs and poor low end performance. The secret to the S4 is the manifold and flappy that gives you two more effective and efficient manifolds in one. One position for low end torque and with the flappy open good high end torque.
You will need the FI and if yours is burned I have a set up off a low mileage 87 S4. The wiring is not much different to adapt to the S4 computers. At least that way you will have a nice running car.
BTW there is a 86 with the S4 motor with a five speed in the SF bay area for under 5K. - running and all.
