Default Driver mirror swap out

Does anyone know if i can swap out the driver-side mirror housing without taking the inside panel off the door?

The whole housing is damaged (so can't just replace from the stem). If I unscrew it all the way I know the dreaded bolt will fall into the door.

Is there a write-up on how to do this? If the panel has to come off, is there something on how to do that? I have the replacement mirror/housing in hand.

Searched around a bit and found a few postings, but not quite what I needed.

Any help is appreciated.

From what I recall the mirrors can be removed from the car w/o taking the door panel off, you turn the mirror 90 deg and remove the allen.
However now you have to deal with the wires that run all the way through the door under the dash (no disconnect in door).
So you could disco them from inside the mirror where they attach to the motor.

Easiest is to remove inner panel. and remove retainers for wiring to give some extra for splicing. Remove panel in center there are 2 10mm (i believe) bolts there. remoce front ducting on door panel (the circular one for a/c) there is one bolt there. There are also 2 inside the door panel cubbie. Before this remove both door lock wheel, retainer, and door handle backing. The arm rest piece should come off now. Disconnect wiring for mirror and side switch.

On the bottom of main panel will be 2 phillip screws they are hard to find usually but need to be removed or bottom cardboard will be torn. The rest of panel is held on with plastic panel holders. Use panel removal tool (or screwdrive) to pop them from door. When these are out panel will come off but will hang from speaker wiring. If careful replacment of mirror can be done now. I disconnect speakers and get whole thing out of the way.

Believe this covers it if not others will chime in. Basically take your time and not be in a hurry. Hope this helps.

No you don't need to remove the door panel to change the mirror. At least not on mine - 1991.
Here's something that will help you:

Thanks all,

Since the replacement mirror's wire were cut (no plug on the end)...I decided to change it out without taking the door panel off. Worked out perfectly!

Again, thanks
