Default Dying fuel pump?

Starting today, my car will just cut off dead. I checked the fuel pump fuse and replaced the relay with my spare and then with a known good relay. Car will turn over fine but won't fire. But, if I rap the cover over the fuel pump and filter one time with a tire iron, it will fire up immediately and run fine for a mile or 2, and then die again. I think the pump is either dying or something is getting stuck in it. Sound likely?

I've heard you can reverse the voltage polarity and make the pump run backwards forcing what ever is stuck in the pump back into the tank. But, it may get stuck in the pump again.

But it does sound like your pump is dying. Or you may have a loose connection or a broken wire that temporarily re-connects with the smacking on the cover.

I had a slowly dying fuel pump.....UNTIL it died.... It would have odd cutouts over sharp impacts (like really harsh freeway expansion joints) or abrupt up-down motions (typically on track)....

Once it died it would start and run briefly for maybe a minute or two...then die....just to repeat after hours of sitting....turns out the internal resistance of the pump would read normal when cool....then spike to the point the pump wouldn't run after a minute or too....new pump fixed it!!!

I checked the wiring, it's all snug.

I let the car sit for about 30 minutes and it would not start, but, like I said, if I knock the cover it will start immediately.

Ordering one over-night in the morning. Maybe some FOTE injectors too, while I'm at it.
