Default Rim damaged when installing new tires

A bit off 928 topic, but I took two tires to have installed on my rear SRT8 rims. I didn't check them before leaving but after washing the car, I noticed black markings and scratches on the rim. I went back to the shop and they stated that I had curbed the rims. No way I say. He shows me the machine and points out that they use a nylon fitting that pushes the tire over the rim. I explained that the black nylon is still on my rims where the scratches are. They were going to have a district manager call me back, but nothing. I contacted tirerack since this was one of their recommended installers and sent them photos, and they haven't called back either.

Anyone else run into this? Any suggestions?

Lesson learned.

I always closely examine my wheels just before it goes on the lift, then again after the wheel installation is complete.

That damage may well have been there when you brought the car in.

Happens all the time.....minimum wage guy little training does not adjust the machine....besides it is just another wheel and tire and he sees lots of them each day ! You almost need to photo all the wheels as you take in the car, for evidence.

I'm sure they damaged the wheels. However, since you didn't catch it before you took them back I doubt they will do anything about it.

You're probably outta luck. Have to catch that stuff before you leave. I always bring the wheels, not the car, and make sure everything is nice and clean.

This is a real irritation to me too. A lot of tire shops let your wheel flop over onto its face as they run it back and forth from the mounting machine. Basically, they don't try to protect the appearance of the wheel face, and if you complain they say it was already that way when you came in.

I had my wheels refinished at Wheels America and I know, they can put a tire on a wheel and balance it without making any marks whatsoever. Stands to reason, they pay more attention because you'd be upset if you just had your wheels redone and found damage from the mounting and balancing.

At my Wheels America location, they'll mount and balance a tire for $12, so the last time I got new tires I just took the wheels over there and had them do it. Not only did they not make any marks, none of the the wheel weights flew off afterwards ;-)
