Thanks for all the tips everyone.
The paint used to be REALLY bad. If you look at the washer nozzle in the pic below, you can see the whiteish color around it.

The entire top half of the hood was like that at one point - no water spots - just whitish paint everywhere. It was like the water spots all joined together. I could take my fingernail and scrape the surface of the paint and you could see the etch marks from my finger nail in the whitesh color. It was bad.

Its easily fixed - with a moderate-cut polish (do NOT use cutting compound), and a follow-up with a lighter polish to finish off.
If you don't have a random orbital, pads and the right polish, just get the car to a pro detailer - its the kind of job they really enjoy because the results are so extreme.
This is what you're talking about, right?

With a good polish it can be fixed

jeff, i read your first post and thought ,' ahh, I bet the car is red'!
We had a 560SL, that only the boot lid did this, similar to Hiltons' hood.
When we went to seel it we got a local body shop to try to fix.
They just were more agressive than me.
I used random orbital etc, but couldn't bring myself to 2000 wet sand it, [read 'chicken'!!]
Anyway they said it had been resprayed at some time and was often due to incorrect drying or a thinners issue.
Wha'ts wierd as it only started after going to a car wash in Torquay and the final spot remover sent the whole car whiteish. After ****ting myself, we got some polish and was able to restore the rest of the car but the boot was always a problem. If I kept on a constant waxing schedule it would be ok, but let it go and it would turn white.
sorry, no real solutions except a respray
