Default Why clean and shiny?

One thing that you notice on this forum is how clean and shiny the majority of 928's are.

I live in a very rural area where cow **** rules the road, and the local farmers excel in dropping great clods of earth/mud everywhere.

The upshot is it is impossible to keep a car clean, all my cars, including the 928, are mechanically good but ascetically upsetting - to say the least.

Taking this one step further, has anyone gone for a painted 'rusty/dirty' look on their 928.

Attached ( I hope) is a painted merc, the car has no physical rust.

^^^ Haha - rusty plastic bumpers...

If you'd park a car like this at a US shopping mall, people would not worry about adding door dings to the decor.

I've heard this is a strange trend in some automotive circles. I saw pictures of a VW Bug that looked crazy rusty, and appeared to have the hood held-on by rope. The bumpers were crooked, and so were a few other things. IIRC, it also had a rusty chrome roof rack with some old boxes strapped to it. But underneath, the car was finely tuned, with powerful engine, sports suspension, etc. It would pass any vehicle inspection, but you'd think it's falling apart.

This is not it, but you get the idea:

In our community, the only one I can think of that comes remotely close is the "very brown" 928. Similar idea - no pretentious looks, but technically top. Right, James?

We have one local guy with a high mileage S4 5 speed that never gets washed or vacuumed. I don't understand it myself.

Rest assured, I'm out here, I cleaned chewed open nuts and ratbait from the valley of my engine this afternoon (rats obviously have been seeking shelter in my engine bay) meanwhile There are muddy cat paw prints tracking through the dust on the outside of the car and the usual accumulation of twigs small stones and dust (ex mud) on the floor mats.

Meanwhile the car will do 0-60 in 5.6 secs and the 1/4 in high 13s not bad for a 4.5 litre!

P.S. I reckon I could improve the 0-60 by half a second by removing my rev limiter !

Cheers Roy

Good on yer Roy.

Mine has muddy cat prints in it too!

Mud up the inside on the door where I hold it open with my foot to open and close the gate.

All the wheel arches are jamb packed solid with mud, they get pressure washed out 2 or 3 times a year.

Fantastic.........if only they did a 4x4 version of the 928!

One of my last 928 had been papered all her life, zymol this and zymol that. Looked fantastic and I bet you could of eaten your lunch off any part, top or bottom side.

BUT..........
A complete wreck mechanically

I know which way round to have my prioritise on a car that loves to be driven, and is built to be driven hard and fast.

I'd rather my cars look as good today as they did the day they rolled out of the showroom. That is just me. I prefer cars that look and run as good as a new car. I think they call it "pride of ownership."

Pre-chop:

Slammed, chopped, aircraft inspired "dashboard", and powered by a Toyota turbo motor...

FWIW, the car was beautiful:

But was then hit by a semi and totalled, the owner chose to buy it back and have some fun with it...

Sadly, do to an unfortunate battery arc with gasoline too close it's ultimate demise was like this:

It's been reported that his stockpile of super rare wheels was lost in the fire as well, all $20K worth.

Moby, my 928, is a semi-basket case with poor paint, and a so-so interior. My 944t is pristine and the Cayenne is the daily driver/family truckster. When (if) Moby gets out of the garage, it's going to be as the poor-weather road warrior.

I was thinking about getting him back into seriously nice shape after my wife expressed an interest in 928s after Hershey last year. But this year there were a lot more Cayennes around - including a couple in the concours, and now she's talking about a Cayenne turbo.
