'86 Timing Belt Failure FS near Houston
Heh... I sure don't need the project, but if the price is right... Any of you guys near Cypress willing to take a look at this with me? It's been many years since I drove or rode in a 928.

Jim and I looked at this car last Saturday. Somehow I missed this thread though.
Stan,
How is it cheaper to fix? I guess I thought the heads were pretty similar but since you have to pull the engine on an S3, it would be more difficult/costly to fix.
Flint,
The car is in decent shape, but the engine compartment is a mess, very dirty a really bad intake paintjob that is flaking off. Paint is a bit rough, but might clean up. Driver's seat has a tear. Odometer shows 79k, but it is not working and the current owner doesn't know how long it's been out. Not much history at all since the owner has only had it 1.5 years. The windshield has a crack. Lots of oil on the underside as though the engine has never be resealed. Wheels are stocks that have been chromed and look ok. It does run but barely.

Thanks for the information. What would be your advice on dropping a $2k motor from 928 International in there? Do you think the car would be worthwhile at a sale price of say $2k?
As soon as I type that, I reckon not. I see sorted 85-86s all the time for $6 - 7k. I'd have to get the body for practically nothing...

Yeah, we looked it over pretty well, at least at a cusory level. It needs what ever the engine problem is resolved; at some substantial cost. It is not clear that the engine can be saved, either yes or no will be expensive. Either replacement engine or several new valves, new rubber throughout, repair the intake, new head gaskets, etc. Transmission is an unknown but owner says OK. Odometer does not work so mileage is well over 79k. Windshield has crack. Paint is questionable on much of the car, but not "bad", just may need some attention and some repaint. No sign the flex plate has been checked in a very long time for movement and possible TBF issues. Needs MM. Rack looked to be leaking on drivers end. Tires have at least 50% tread but age of the tires was not checked, nor did I look for cracks in the rubber. The engine and undercarriage and transmission are all grease encased....shocks looked original and certainly suspect. AC unknown but "needs recharged" per the owner. Belts on engine all need replaced, belly pans missing.
The car is too good to part out, but one would have a lot of hours in it, as well as perhaps $7500 to make a decent but a lot less than perfect $5000 car....if it were a 5 speed, I would do it....auto, not so much...oh, owner says it has a full tank of gas, so that improves it's status by say $85

Flint,
I doubt 928Intl has any $2k engines. When I called about a month ago, they had only 2 S4 engines, one for $3500 and one for $4500. The only information I could get on the engines was that "they're both around 100k ". From average salvage yards I got detailed information, VIN#'s and pics. I ended up getting a 59k 88 engine for $2800 from NH. Granted I was asking about S4 engines, so they may have an 85/86 I didn't hear about. Still I doubt they have any 32v engines that cheap.

Thanks again for the information, guys. That devil on my shoulder still says I should offer him $1000, but I'll pass on this one. Don, good luck on the rebuild; I'm following your thread with interest.
