LOL My phone was delicately placed in the toilet and then said toilet was flushed several times by an 18 month old... Kids, what can ya do?

Thanks for the offer though!
Hey Jim, where is that code, is it stamped on the side of the housing, or is it on top where I'll never be able to find it... I'll take a jack along, but I have no idea if the guy will let me lift up his car?

Any ideas where to find the option list? If it's not under the carpet in the back where is it? Does it have one? I'll grab the VIN when I'm there...

Would the lsd add to the value of the car? I would think it so, but how much? 500 bucks?

Whoa.

You won't find an option sticker on that vintage.

You will find a stamping on the tranny on the bottom tail end, wo jacking the car (easy though).

Adds a little bit to the value, but should add little to the price of this vehicle in terms of relative percentage. If the car was $1, it may add a penny.

Well I just got back. The beater blazer made another trip to Oakland county and back.

Here are the pics I shot of this car, the interior is just beat... http://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x344/Trips_928/

I'm uploading a few vids I took, they should be available shortly.

The good...
Everything works in this car, the heat, a/c, sunroof (very slow) windows, tach and the speedo/odometer, even the clock. I pulled up the carpet and checked out the box, all was dry (it's been stored in a garage for 20+ years so it should be dry) It did have a few stray wires from an alarm, but it looked OK. It does have the m28/11 (I tried to get a pic, but no joy) Good back tires, nice smooth clutch that was changed when the trans was rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. Paint is decent at 10 feet, which is about what I wanted anyway.

The bad...
The paint is rough and cracked, looks like it was shocked with ice water in the hot sun or shocked with hot water in the cold. See the pics, the cracks are slight, but they can be seen when the sun is a the right angle. It's been hit in the r. front fender, it was repaired and the paint doesn't quite match, but silver is a very difficult color to get right. The trans is a bit difficult to get into second, but it's manageable. Once it's warmed up the slight grind goes away... The interior, oh man this is by far the worst part of the car! The rear quarters are destroyed and there's no fixing them I would guess. The dash is leather (it's not cracked!) but it has a black goo all over it. The seller thinks it may be some kind of adhesive seeping through the leather? I did manage to rub some of it off. The seats were recovered in some rock hard vinyl that was very poorly done. It has what looks to be box staples(!) holding the seat together. There is also some horrible white stitching... The carpets are about an 8 of 10. (See the GM badge... That's on the rugs lol) The center console is pulling away from the dash but it appears to be intact. But the good thing is the seats are wide enough for me to fit! So no Camaro seats. Both the hood struts and the hatch struts are leaking and won't stay open. The chin spoiler is cracked in several places and will need to be replaced, I see why it's broken, his driveway is at an extreme angle. It hits everytime.

It appears one of the intake boots may be leaking. But other than needing a good cleaning and replacement of a missing cap, the underhood looks pretty descent! The clutch fan spins with Zero resistance, so it may be a candidate for an e-fan... He said it never overheats, but when he was in Vegas last summer the temp got close to the red when idling in traffic without the A/C on. The a/c efan works fine.

The test drive!
I let him drive it first to see if he abused it or not and I'm happy to say that he did not. The trans would complain abit when going into second while driving through his neighborhood. Once warmed up the grinding went away, just as he said. Motor runs smooth and strong, no smoke and nothing out of the ordinary. He ran it through the gears and got he moving along at a steep pace, probably a little faster than I would through traffic, but it was fun none the less.

I took the wheel and I was immediately greeted with a seat that fit me and I didn't have my head sticking out of the sunroof and my knees in my chest like I had in the 87 S4 at the Royal Oak GTG. I was geeked, I fit in this thing!

I was gentle at first to get the feel of it, all was well. Suspension was tight and firm, steering was much better than I expected, even with a low front tire. (didn't know it was low until we got back) Then after a few miles I asked if I could get on it and I was encouraged by the seller.

Power was smooth, and strong all the way from idle to 5k-5.5k I didn't want to go too high, he said the dist doesn't have a rev limiter anymore and I wasn't going to test it. I did snap it into second like I meant it, I was no wuss with it. It popped right into gear without any bitching, i let the clutch out a little too fast and chirped the tires... I looked a Don (seller) and he laughed, he said next time shift it like a man! LOL I did a decent burnout from a stoplight, nothing like smudaarr did in his 0-60 vid, but I definitely kicked the snot out of the WRX that was instigating my better judgment...

I would compare the 0-120mph performance to be on par with an LTI F-body. Nothing spectacular, but definitely fun. A shot onto the highway was even better than on the street, I hammered on it when I pulled onto an on ramp to get on the highway and I was well over 100 by the time I was nearing traffic. That was good enough for me. I later took the beater blazer down the same on ramp and could only hit 75, so I'd say the 928 knock the socks off my Blazer, which in turn would tear-up a 5 liter fox body.

Now after you guys have read this and looked at the pics and vids, what do you think? The interior is shot, but the car runs like a dream and does everything properly. I love it and it as everything I could do not to hand him the 3500 and drive it home. I know the interior is shot and it'll cost a fortune to replace, but i think it's something I can live with for the time being. I don't know if it has the LSD, but it sure left a pair of greasy BFG tracks for about 150 feet.

Turn up your sub! This Ansa muffler sounds pretty good.

Here's the vin...

WPO = World Manufacturer code West Germany.
ZZZ= ROW
92 = first two digits of the model designation
Z = filler.
D = 83 model year?
S = place of manufacture (Stuttgart)
8 = third digit of model designation
4 = ROW
0638 = Car's serial number

Is this correct?

All interior carpet pieces come in a glue-in kit. $500 to $750 depending on style ( I did the $750 mercedes velour).

Seats will emerge on the market for $250 or less each and bolt-in.

Rear quarters.. depends, $120 or so a piece maybe for real nice ones. If bad, its 90% certain the windows need to be pulled and seals cleaned / improved.

To have an early S that runs that well after being tucked away --- that's pretty impressive.

Fan might be refillable for $25 worth of silicon fluid + a syringe.

I didn't get any pics of the quarters with the hatch open, I was looking at other things and forgot about them. They really aren't that big of a deal for me. But here is a pic one of them.

The car has been stored indoors since he bought it in 92, do you think the window seals are the cause of the bad quarters? It makes sence. But at the same time the car is rarely driven in the rain and he said it's never seen snow.

I thought the sun had just dried up the adhesive? I'm asking because I don't know, I'm not trying to second guess anyone.

One thing that confuses me, shouldn't a Euro car have German heater controls? This is in English... Maybe it's been changed? The numbers are in C though? I'm confused. It's titled as an 84, but it doesn't have the dual dizzys. IIRC somewhere I read that gray market cars may be titled for the year they come into the US, not necessarily title to the year they were made. Is that correct?

It is a European control head. The temps are in celcius.

I have no idea what to think, that's why I'm asking everyone here.

I was told this car is only worth 2500 at best? I think 3000-3300 sounds about right, but I'm used to American cars that have interior parts that look like this after only a year.

Yup, the car is listed for 3800, but he said he'd take 3500. He has someone else that wants to look at it, he then proceeded to tell me that if this other guy doesn't buy it, he'd drop the price... I hadn't even asked him how much, he just volunteered it. The car has been on C/L since Nov and there's only been 4 people to look at it, Andrew, Dennis, me and someone else that wanted to make it a "Hot Rod" He chased that guy away. As far as the "Other guy that want to look at it" I think he was just saying that to try to get me to hand him over some cash.

Bring 3000 and your poker face.... Start out at 2500 and see what happens.
