Jim,
If the door is sagging it's because the door hinge pieces are breaking off the frame. You need to have them welded back on.

Colin you are correct about the hinged pieces...they already have been welded before just not lined up well.

My first car was a 924 turbo (931). Also had a 931 project car that I was planning on converting to a carrera gt replica. However sold it and then ran into a 928 project. Very light and fun cars. I would only buy a turbo again with the 5 lug suspension though. Enjoy it. I have to say it is a lot cheaper to fix up than the 928!

Jim,

Keep in mind in order to keep that 4 lug brakes (rear drums) working at top efficiency, you need to adjust the rear brakes every 10,000 miles........

I've owned a couple 924's. One 1978.5 one 1988. I still own a 931. Yes, much cheaper to work on than the 928. Take a look at the door hinges like the previous member said, its good to catch them when they're only cracking and you can still hopefully spot weld them. Take a look at the battery box too, they rot, more so with sun roof 924's. Is yours a 5 speed or a 4? My 78.5 was a 4 speed. A lot of the same electrical gremlins are in the 924, so keep a look out. Adjusting the air/fuel on these ones is very simple. They can get some really good mpg. Blow out the hatch drains or else you find puddles where the spare tire is. .....I've had more than my share of 924 experiences to say the least. I always joke about how the designers or workers at the 924 factory put the early cars together because you'll find they went through over 6 different fuel injection ideas/updates/changes from 76-82, 3 different head-bolt head types/sizes (hex or socket) from 76-82, and from 76-82, two different ignitions and a few different timing settings depending on your country and ignition system. Its like they would all have a meeting every year (or half) at the factory and ask "ok, so what kind of parts do we get this year, and what do we have left?" Mine was classified as a 78.5. Not always easy getting some of the minor parts for it because some things were different, and some weren't.
Fun little cars. Reliable too.

Just learned that the filming is now being done in another state so the car gets shipped......highly unlikely that it will be coming back...... Thanks for all the info and comments. I will update this AFTER the show airs.

It was a very good profit center for Porsche for a very long time since the production costs were so low and all assembly done by VW. VW even paid for all the developement cost before a change in management and the economy killed the project. Porsche bought the rights at a huge discount and put the Porsche emblem on the nose....there is no doubt that it helped the company survive and have the money to do the 928. Plus it was a great first Porsche for many, many people.

They were rather competitive for its era too considering its competition class was 280z's and zxt, rx7, whatever toyota made. They handle pretty well considering. Great weight distribution, fuel mpg, features like AC, power mirrors, rear disk. Good car altogether.
