Congrats on the car, and about the manuals, for most you can get buy with the great CD set from Jim, I think that Roger sells them.

You will have plenty of places to put that extra 400 bucks.

Default Made a decision.

Hi guys, it's the 18 year old 928 buyer here :P

I'm buying an 87 S4. We agreed on $10,500 and he's going to get the cooling system electrical all re-wired properly, and safety it at the same time. I'm glad i consulted with all of you guys before i went out and bought something.

Should i buy the workshop manuals? I found a set on eBay for about $500. Do these manuals not also increase in value over time because they are getting increasingly harder to find on actual paper?

Manuals exchange hands for half that.
The CD set is far more valuable, especially the 50% that isn't part of the manuals.

This isn't really an endeavor where money will be made easily, so do "know" that going-in.

That's funny, going up in value. People make copies and sell them as new. Whatever. It was suggested you buy the CDs in one of your other threads. Did you have the car inspected? GLWTS; or should I say purchase. Want to see pictures.

Save your money for now, for parts, and a 1year Rennlist membership - you're going to need both! (improved access to search etc. here plus ability to post pics is worth it)

You can download just the factory manuals from a torrent, or from this site:

http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals.htm

Sure, the other material on the Jim Morehouse compilation of factory technical bulletins and other material is very handy, but you can get by without it (especially if you have membership here) and you're going to quickly find that a lot of small jobs on a 928 add up to a lot of money, especially once you learn about WYAITs and the large body of work even little fixes will gather!

Seriously, save your remaining budget for parts - use the money saved from the DVD to buy a fuel line kit, or a Kempf timing belt tension tool (both are vital first jobs - that will help avoid the two biggest, costliest disasters a 5-speed S4 can suffer).

For that price, I hope that it is a very nice example. I agree with everyone else on the manuals. Paper versions can be convenient for those who work on 928s all the time, but I wouldn't spend the money. Every bit of information in those paper manuals is available for free online.

I think these should apply pretty well to your 87 (as a supplement to the manuals).

Greg: How'd you manage to get to the top of this thread?

Well of course not, I did not anticipate being in here alot, just initially to get advice about buying/owning a 928.

So... you thought you would just stop in and suck out some info take a hike huh? You aren't getting off that easy! Seeing that you bought an S4 for $10500 and you are a first time 928 owner, you will be here a lot. Membership is worth it.

Get the membership. It's well worth it.
