Default To Sell the 928 at Hershey or Not To Sell...That Is The Question (long rant)

So last week I finally pulled the trigger and replaced my high milage Pathfinder with an 06 Titanium Edition Cayenne S. 50K, CPO, Artic Silver on Gray/Black...great car. So bonus now I have two P cars in the stable.

So last year at around this same time, when I had just gotten back from service in Iraq, I bought the 928 as my gift to me at the Hershey swap meet. You may remember the car, a 1981 red on tan 5 speed, 79K, Competition Package, rub rail delete, detailed maintance history car. I got a good deal on the car, think I paid $6,500 and walked away.

Immediately I began the maintenance that needed done. Did the water pump, alternator, timing belt, changed all the fluids, new fuel lines, new injectors, new ignition switch and key, new cat back exhaust, new brakes, etc and basically got the car up to speed. Cosmetically I tinted all the windows, smoked front turn signal indicators, clear front bumper corners, new hood heat shield, did some minor touch up paint work, and added a set of Cup II rims on Perilli Tires. So all that said in done is lets say 5K. Total Cost = $11,500

Now the car is good to go for what I use it for which is basically when I want to take my girl out someplace nice to eat or go someplace that requires a little more of a statement. In fact I think I just turned 81,000 on it today. Other then that the car sits under its cover at home.

Now if I were to keep the car the things that would need to be done in the future (not right away but in a couple years). Replace clutch, install new motor mounts, rebuild transmission, new vaccuum lines, etc. All things I would do to a regular high milage, older car. This would be to get the car perfect. There are a few minor odds and ends that need fixed too like the drivers side doorlock sticks sometimes and the headlight washers don't work but nothing big. So lets say that's another 5K. So I'm in for $16,500.

So this leave me my dilema. Lets say I put the car up for sale for say $9,999 and to someone who really wants the car I get it. Good I save $5k in future maintenance but I'm still already down by $1,500. And then the bigger question....what do I get for that $9,999 in the P car family.

Probably a semi decent 944 or another 928 in the same shape as mine. I would need another 5K to get into a good 968 probably, and then at the 15K mark you could start looking into early Boxsters.

UGH! Don't know what to do. Guys chime in with you opinions and comments. Just enjoy the 928, pay to play and have fun with it, or sell it???

If it's in generally good shape, keep it. Especially if you'd consider replacing it with another 928 down the line anyway.

A 928 in the garage is worth 5 in the classifieds.

keep it! Keep the refresh going, not sure why you think you might need to do the transmission?! Why would you want an early boxter when you've got a supercar top-of-the-line porsche that would destroy it in any race you'd care to set up??? If you get power-bored you can always boost it.

It appears like you have just spent all this time, effort, and your hard earned money to bring this 928 up to speed and make it your own. Now you want to do the same thing all over again ? Now that you know what you have, keep & enjoy it. T

Sell. (I'm going to be at Hershey with my checkbook.)

JK: Keep it. There's always next year. In the meantime: enjoy the Cayenne!

You need to pace yourself with all the work to be done. Just enjoy the car, and pick one project per year, do it in the winter.
"perfection" and "1981 928" are not really do-able, it will drive you to drinkin'. Just enjoy a good 928 as-is while it is getting better.

If you like it then keep it. If it hasn't grown on you then sell it.

Either way you're not going to recover what you have into it so that should be taken out of the equation.

Oh and how about some current pictures to help us all with the responses.

From all the feedback looks like I'll be keeping her. I think what I'll do is put it in the concourse just to show and see if she gets a good response or not. I know I won't place in a people's choice show but it will be good to see if it's just me being a perfectionist or the car is better then the average 928.

In an interesting series of events I talked to my 65 year old father about the situation last night. Now he's always been a big american muscle car guy but never an exotic guy. He didn't even really like both my 308's I previously owned. Anyway, told him what I was thinking and he said if I decide to sell it to let him know first and HE'D buy it from me I was like what you never like any of my exotics. His reply....you haven't had one like this before.

Coming from my father, that says a lot for the car. I will try to get some pics up, I need to find my card reader for my camera disk and then we are in business.

Keep it!!

A well sorted OB is not a bad thing!!!

If you start getting bored w it, do suspension, wider wheels and tires, short throw shifter, cool 930 steering wheel etc. Sounds like most of the PM has been done, now it's time to have fun!!!

Given that you paid $6,500 why would it bring $9,999 ??? The wheels might add some but repairs add little....just how it is !

His is an 81......it is barely competive with a 944s, and Boxsters will easily outperform it on many roadrace courses.. It is classified in H for POC racing as are 2 liter 911s which are far faster. So a 67 911s far exceeds the 1981 "supercar" . It is great to love your car but please be a little bit realistic.
