"R Gruppe" 928 Feasibility
It may seem like I'm crazy, but I have REALLY been toying with thoughts of buying a '73 or earlier 911 tub and doing a "R Gruppe" style 911. Huge fenders and all. RSR or 934 style.
Which got me thinking about that sort of thing for a 928. What if you took an OB or Euro S and turned it into a flared fendered, huge tired, super loud exhaust havin' maniac 928? Obviously keeping it super "retro" and not too many hints of new age stuff. So, no S4+ cars obviously.
Thoughts?

I have been saying this for awhile now.
The only problem is to stay true to the Porsche type mods like the 911 R Gruppe guys do. It would be a bit difficult since there weren't many "go fast" bits and pieces that Porsche made for the 928. So the temptation would be to do American style "hot-rod" mods as many do.
Thinking early Euro 5 speed version, with a tasteful rear seat delete using a nice carpet set like the current GT3 cars, a small rear fender massage to put bigger wheels/tires on, period correct Recaro race seats and a few other tasteful mods that would look like Porsche would have done. Start putting in large sub-woofers and stereos and such and it won't work.
Biggest problem would be the wheels since the five spoke Fuch wheel just doesn't work on the 928. So taking a cue from their 1984 Euro Daytona racer they made, a set of period BBS mesh style wheels would probably be the trick.
Then finish it off in a cool color.
Again the problem would be to stay to a correct time period and not put newer parts on it from newer years. Like say a S4 wing on an older S body.
To do this correctly would take time, vision and some good money. Another requirement is to have the whole car look exceptionally clean with no weak areas visually.
I know it would be an oddity since I don't believe it has been done correctly yet.
Good luck if you do it.

There are already 928s out there that have gotten the stripped out treatment with a bolt in cage, loud exhaust and some funky add on bits that could be candidates for the Rat Rod look. Not all are well executed though and some are just Ratty Rods.
The R Gruppe treatment is different IMHO. Like Jon said, it would be very difficult to do correctly with a 928. I already have put together such a car in my head with some of the styling cues already mentioned in my first post. But it will not be cheap and finding the right car to begin with would be difficult.
I would love to do one for someone who would be willing to though. It would be a real different R Gruppe car and one that I don't believe exists yet. It would be great to put it together and show up at an R Gruppe meeting in California and see what the founders of the R Gruppe would say.
