I'm seeing values (prices) all over the place in my searching for a 928.

I have also not seen a definitive "Worth it or not" type of thread.

Thinking it would be kinda fun and maybe useful to post all the craigslist/ebay finds people may be shopping for in one thread to hear comments and feedback on each car. The thread would, maybe, then become a bit of a resource for future shoppers.

Thoughts? Is there a thread like this floating around that I have not found yet?


...and just to kick it off. Here is a 200,000 mile S4 I found locally that I am just curious what people have to say about it?!

You'll find that this group thinks that the cars ARE worth it. You have to realize that most have the cars and deal with all the nuances because they love the 928, not because it was a good investment.

So, they'll do the $10k to be a $5k car and have another good 928 running around.

The question is more of is the "asking price" worth it for a particular car.

That car has been for sale for quite a while. I think a few locals have looked at it, including Stan. I would ask his opinion of it.

This is a maxo-enzo thread. Occurs twice a week.

Make some "whats it worth" searches and educate yourself.

Just for rough guidance --- you need to spend 15 to 20 for a 5 speed S4 that will slide into your toybox and not ruin the snapshot without getting grease under your nails.

Subtract 8 and add-back 6 for parts if you do your own work on a moderately maintained fixer.

Subract 8 and add back 12 if you want somebody else to do the work.

In any case, prerequisite is to spend 20 to 40 hours reading here what's already written. Cliff notes won't cut it.

Must be a reason why it's not selling. Also why does it have CA plates. On face 8k for a 5 speed S4 is a bit on the low side. Upside it has some nice updates and options (besides the K&N filter). If the clutch goes, expect to pay about $1k or more in parts alone. Maybe you can get some local folks to help to look at it with you.

Cole, I actually get what you're saying. Combine a bunch of CL and ebay ads and discuss. I think it would get way too confusing with everybody talking about different ads. I think the singular approach works better for this kind of stuff. My $.02

, since you have a few other cars to drive get it!
I would offer 5500.00 and see what happens then figure about 8500.00 for all the stuff to bring it up to a nice DD standard,
figure an intake refresh 2500.00
new shocks 1000.00,
fresh MMs and OPG 120.00
a rebuilt steering rack 450.00,
new tires 1000.00
Dash refresh and HVAC pods 750.00
AC repair 650.00,
HCV and short hose 45.00
And about 1500.00 for all the other WYAI issues
These prices are with you turning the wrenches.

OR of your really looking for a deal find a nice sorted car for 15,000.00 and be able to drive it away,

YAWN So tired of know it all internet punks trying to protect some little part of their perceived forum world. Anytime you see a screen name you don't immediatly recognize you must try to "beat in" the new guy like some sort of street gang.

Technically, my 928 history probably goes back further than most here. Since we bought one new in 1977 and owned it for 10 years. It was the car I learned to drive on.

Have owned/own many Porsches and built many cars from the bolts up. In the hundreds of hours I have wasted reading Rennlist I have not seen a single thread like the one I proposed. That is why I thoguth it might be neat idea. The prices I see are ALL over the board with seemingly no rhyme or reason.





Thanks for the link. Interesting to see that it has been for sale for a while. I have seen S4s ranging from $2,500 to $30K plus.


I'm curious about all the other years of 928 also. Price ranges are strange.

BTW, you'd find that the consensus on 95% or more of the cars posted would be NOT WORTH IT.

In fact, if you look at an ad and wonder if it's worth it, then the answer (here) will be no unless it's a GTS, a great condition low mileage example, or enthusiast owned with a boatload of documented maintenance and updates.

That doesn't stop many (most?) of us from buying project cars though. We can do the math, but we're gluttons for 928 punishment.
