Default Front struts difference pre 85 and later

What is the difference between a pre 85 front strut and an 85 or later front strut e.g. Boge? Should a Boge strut fit a 1978 car? Same question for the rear struts.

If I remember correctly, the only real difference is that the early cars didn't have height adjusters, whereas the later ones do. They get stuck on our climate however and are useless once the car has been on the road for several years IMHO...
Another difference might be the spring rate which is lower for earlier cars, but could also be changed from the factory.
