Confusing window problem
Searched and could not locate similar problem
Yesterday finished install of driver door speakers. While I had the panel off though would clean up and regrease the plastic sliders, gear, etc. To keep from accidentally smashing the hanging connectors for the mirror controls, etc. I had taped them up using electrical tape to the window frame (window was in down position). The tape was wrapped around the top of the door frame a couple times.
Working window up and down, not totally opening or totally closing, to get at the sliders and teeth on the gear I then put the window in full up position forgetting I had a couple wraps of electrical tape covering the groove the window slots into at the top of the frame. This caused the window to bind a bit going into the groove and since it will not go down..
Passenger window works fine and prior to this never had any issues with the driver window
What I have done so far to try and fix
1. I checked the fuse and it was good
2. Took apart the control switch in center console, looked clean but cleaned up the contact points just in case.
3. Disconnected wires from window motor looking for corrosion, nada, very clean
I would not think it could be the window relay in the fuse panel area as it is used (right?) for both windows and thus if it was bad the passenger window would not work...
If I were to connect some wires using spades to the window motor, how would I test it? In other words, is the motor such that one connector is + and the other - and simply applying power will operate the motor and reversing the +/- makes it move the other direction?
THANKS!

I think the way the windows work is the electronics senses a rise in resistance at the end of travel (up or down) and shuts off power to the motor. If this is correct, could your window be stuck or binding in some way that's causing the electronics to think it's all the way up or down and not sending juice to the motor?
Yeah, thought of that and was able to get the window down via direct power to the contacts. Was able to via wires direct to the motor go up again but since nada...

Theres a thermal protection switch embedded in the motor.
Search for an S4 window rehab thread by Jadz928 in which Wally gives input.
There are 2 wires and they are switched in polarity for the window motor, BTW.
I think they are #1 and #2 at the 18 pin connector that connects to the door harness (near the dead pedal). You need the wiring diagrams to be messing with this. Get CD set from roger.
Separating the connector allows you to measure if voltage is applied via switch to the connector.
You will see it change polarity by rocking the switch front to back.
89 diagram shown.

Found this post by search of "S4 Window Rehab" but nothing in it about fixing, etc.
