WTF would cause those? Look around in the rags you used to soak up the water. See if there is anything in them. Something was in there and we need to find out what it is. It's really odd that there is nothing in there now.

I will keep looking Sean, I wonder is something could still be stuck in the head underneath the valve? I did take the head to a local machine shop that does a lot of industrial work for me. We put the plug back in and filled water on top of the valves. The intake valve with the most damage did leak some. Not bad but my machine guy thought he could clean them up so they seat better. I asked him if he had the right tool to get them out and he said he could do it. I am sure that will give him a better look to see if the valve is actually bent or it is just leaking from the marks. He has been building engines a long time so I trust he knows what to do.

It is possible whatever it was went out through the exhaust. After a valve job, I had an intake valve grenade from the new seat not being properly installed.

I never found the part of the valve that broke off. It could be somewhere in the exhaust system.

The wall does have that mark but feels very smooth. I cannot feel anything when scratching around with my fingernail. I may have found the culprit. Do you guys think this would be large enough to make a knock? It was on the ground in the spot directly below the damaged cylinder, like it could have fallen off with head removal. It has definitely been chewed on.

Just got my head back from the machine shop. One exhaust valve was bent but I think I was lucky considering how bad it could have been. One exhaust valve will be new and the the other three in that cylinder have been ground. I am nervous about getting the valve train installed correctly but if things go well I plan to be running by the end of the weekend.

I am now back on the road. I have a few issues to deal with yet, but considering where I came from I am extremely happy to be to this point. I will feel really good after I test the head gasket for 100 or so miles. I want to thank Roger and Sean for all there support though these trying times. I could not have done it without the help they gave me. I just can not thank them enough.

I seem to have weak vaccum. Before the tear down the flappy was working perfect. Now it no longer functions. I disconnect the line at the vaccum source and it feels weak. What is the small filter that is near the brake booster?

Are you referring to the check valve? Maybe post a pic?

Glad to hear you are up and running.

A bad running car is better than a non-running one.

That check valve is a one way, take it out and suck/blow through it. Check the grommet at the brake booster also, known leak point.
