Default Fabricated and welded y-pipe did not fit!!!!

Just a quick update.....

I put the engine back in so I could confirm the fit of the y-pipe before final welding.

Thanks goodness I did - it didn't fit.

The main problem was that the extension I fabricated lowered the passenger side pipe to where it did not fit between the body and the crossmemeber (my '78 has a crossmember, do all models?).

I had to cut the extension at the flange, and cut the pipe after it angled out of the cat and add another extension there.

Pictures to come this weekend.

Only '78 has the large crossmember. Later cars have a smaller x-member which mounts above the heat shield.

ah, another reason "us" '78 owners are skeptical of almost any claims that something fits!

Speaking of which, do you have a round hole in your driver's side inner fender, which kinda gives access to the clutch master? (The two 5-speed '78s I've looked at had a hole like this.)

No I don't. I better not! Because I've replaced the clutch master without it!

Here's a pic of the finished product. Two extensions (see post #14). And no ribbing about my new welding skills.

The '78 is a bit different, but I hopefully provides a bit of insight.

Off to the garage today to keep at it.

Got to fit it all together with the new oxygen meter.

I've just had some 85/86 manifolds installed in my '82. I got a spacer from Roger and according to the mechanic it all bolted up with no problems at all. They did the job at the same time as new engine mounts/shocks, and steering rack bushes so there was easy access.

From there it went to an exhaust guru for a custom made set up. Rear muffler was squeezed in with some curly plumbing. Big difference in power and HUGE difference in sound...now it has a nice growl...

That's cool.

Does that final loop being close to the fascia concern you?

I'd like to see a pic of the spacer you mention. When I installed the tubular manifols on my car the natural alignment would have been to much of a "dog leg" for a simple spacer. I thought it would work like that until I had the manifolds on and the "Y" back up and connected on the left side.

Hi Glen

I'm not too worried about the proximity....I've felt the paintwork with my hand and it doesn't seem to get beyond slightly warm, even after some heavy throttle work.

I'll be taking the car to the mechanic on tuesday to have it re-tuned for the new setup, so I'll try to get a pic of the spacer for you. It was really just two [three hole] flanges welded to a short pipe section of about 20mm or so. Roger can supply the things if you want one - along with gaskets/bolts/nuts.

That's in interesting tail section, very clever.

Two bullet style mufflers before the Y, then a single and the one in the tail.

Do you have the brand / model of all the mufflers?

I'll ask the exhaust guy about the brands tomorrow....have to go up there in my Landy to pick up the old pipes and mufflers anyway.

Apparently the rear muffler is a Lukey and the other smaller resonators were all made by Redback. Not sure if these things are available in the US though.

Got this all back together and it runs and sounds great.

The gutted cat didn't make it much louder. Or introduce any unwanted harmonics.

But the new set up did inspire a compassionate plea from my 13 year old to be taken and picked up from school in the Porsche!

Which was met with a "yes" and resulted in lots of stares and compliments from school chums.

(And wonderful looks from the PC brigade!)
