Default Crank Position on Euro???

Can anyone tell me whether the crank on a euro should be set to 0d or 45d BTDC? I've searched here and most everything I found noted to set the engine to 45 BTDC but the WSM notes 0d. As the PO had a TB failure which led to most of the valves being replaced I'm assuming this is an interference engine so prior to dismantle I set the crank to 45d thinking this would be the safe bet. Since this is a euro the crank damper does not have a mark for 45d BTDC so before dismantling I calculated where the mark would be and marked the damper with nail polish. I then set the crank to 45d BTDC which turned out to be about 3 teeth on the cam gears (so far so good). During my troubleshooting phase I removed the cam gears, WP, etc, found the problem and now need to remove the engine to fix it. I'm almost done prep'ing the engine for removal but need to rotate the crank to be able to access the bolts on the TT shaft clamping sleeve. However, I've found that while rotating the engine to be able to access the bolts I have resistance??? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I've always locked it down at TDC, some use the 45 degree mark so they can rotate the cams all the way around.

Sean,
Can I infer from what you've wrote that if I lock the cams at 45d BTDC then I should be able to rotate the crank all the way around? (no liability intended).

Locking the crank at the fly wheel and you can rotate the cams around. Might work the other way, but I doubt it, I've never tried it.

Nope. The 45 degree position puts the pistons down in the bores so that you can rotate the cams. There is no cam position that will allow you to freely rotate the crank. Only way to rotate the crank would seem to be to reinstall the timing belt so that the cams also rotate...

Now it makes sense, thank you. Luckily I was able to loosen and slide the clamping sleeve back without rotating the crank too much.

you have to also remove the clutch to remove the engine so put the belt on or remove the cam towers dont turn the crank till you do either or you will possibly bend more valves
NOTE the crank at 45 deg BTDC will have the keyway pointing at the 3 O clock position
TDC it will be at 4 O clock
