IIRC the factory-recommended interval is 30k. I try to do it at half of that.
Fluid is Dexron in whatever the current incarnation. Get good fluid, a new filter kit with the drain plug seals. And have fun. It can be messy, but won't be with a little care and thought. Get everything clean beforehand, especially around the filler and the reservoir.
