Herman,

I'm thinking there will be an engine pull party and maybe an engine install party as well. I'll keep you posted. The lift has already come in handy for sure. Have you discovered you can crush aluminum cans with your yet? It's my son's favorite chore now.

Yes, it's an S4, but someone put 928 GT stickon letters on the back. The seller advertised as a GT but I think it was an honest mistake, he knew nothing about 928's.

I had to load the car back on the trailer today and take it to a licensed auto dealer to have it "appraised". In Texas, since 06, a law has been in place to try to eliminate the fraud in private used car transactions when it comes to paying taxes. The rediculous law makes you pay taxes on the sales price, or the "Presumed Value" from their system, whichever is higher. The VIN didn't come up in the system, so I had to call the state controller's office, and they looked up an NADA value of 12,300. So I was looking at over $800 in taxes. The only way around it for a car with issues like this one, is to have it appraised, at a minimum cost of $100. I found a really cool car dealer near by, who charged me $25 and put on the form he charged me $100, and appraised the value at 4k. He wouldn't go down to what I paid, but still 4k helps a lot on the taxes. Now I'm good to get the title transferred tomorrow. What a pain...

The best thing about 928's... they look damn good even with catastophic engine failure!
(The $3000 wheels cleaned up nicely)

What's up with the "You can trust your car to the man who wears the star" sign? I thought you worked for the other brand?
Nice buy, and I'll take the sign to save you further embarasment....

That looks like a an early 2000s (2003?) Audi key housing. Someone loved that car to death, but wasn't a motorhead.

Yep that is an Audi key. My brother has one just like it. It opens like a switch blade.

Wow, I'm amazed, is there anything you guys don't know? Audi key, guess that means it's non-functional as far as the buttons go.

Donald, I acutally worked for an alliance between Shell and Texaco back in the late 90's, but this was disolved when Chevron bought Texaco. Shell got the rights to all the Texaco stations and either shut them down or rebranded them to Shell. I was just happening by a Texaco station near my house at the right time and saw all the old signage by the dumpster after it had been rebranded to Shell. The guy behind the counter told me to take anything I wanted and he didn't even know I was a Shell employee! To finish out the story, after a few years, the agreement gave the rights to the Texaco brand to Chevron, and they have opened some stations under the old brand, so now when you see a Texaco station, it will say "With Techron" on the pump...very confusing.

I think those wheels were more than $3k... IIRC, that was the starting price for the silver painted ones. Your chromies were probably fetching some more coin than that... maybe $4k?

Even with the potential damage to the engine... it still sounds like a great deal! Congrats Don!

Barry,

You may be right on the wheel price. Here's a page I found, looks like they are still for sale, but they don't show a chrome option. Maybe these were chromed by someone else. Like I said, the chrome is not pefect, but you have to look pretty close to see the issues. I have to say, I like them a lot more now knowing they were expensive! Just thinking the ride is going to be pretty harsh.

Check this out, I found another RL thread on the 993 forum where someone was talking about these wheels and mentioned 3k for one wheel! Sure enough, here's my cart when I added 4 wheels! Unbelievable!

Appearantly they are 6061 T6 aluminum alloys.

Re the continually operating hatch release.

There's a transistor in the circuit that effectively shorts the motor connections together when the motor reaches it's park position (where it is unpowered) making the motor work as a generator and thus a very effective brake This fails and allows the motor and mechanism to coast past the park position and power up again. There's a good thread somewhere on repairing this I think Borland was the original poster and I added a couple of picsI think but I can't find it now. The replacement transistor is about $1 (Probably about $10 for 1000) - just solder it in place and chances are problem is solved.

Don, your kidding about the wheels.. WOW. Dangit, I missed my chance. Talked to the seller about the car a few weeks ago when it turned up in Houston. Figured TBF and never looked further. If indeed the rims are worth 3k (maybe a lot more?? Wow.) then you REALLY scored with this one. Great buy! Glad it went to a Rennlister!
