Default Off topic but Texas DRT/Alamo needs your help`

Yes, this is off topic but with the number of Texas folks here thought wouldnt hurt...

In short my wife is a member of the DRT (Daughters of the Republic of Texas) due to her great, great grandfather was John W. Smith, the last man living at the Alamo also know as the messenger. Well, the DRT needs your help, the Alamo itself actually.

Most people do not realize the Alamo is not managed in any way by the federal or state government and is not funded by either of them. It is totally funded and managed by the DRT via donations and items they sell at the Alamo gift shop for example. Recently a write for the San Antonion newspaper, Scott Huddleston wrote an article which referenced a letter sent to the DRT to which he had access before it was received by DRT. He put it in the Saturday paper but he added the word "poor" in front of stewardship changing the meaning entirely. I have attached a PDF of the actual letter here.

In short, it is believed Mr. Huddleston for some reason has a vendetta against the DRT and beyond that his taking editorial liberties by adding the word "poor" was completely unprofessional.

Please, if you are in Texas or just a fan, email the San Antonio newspaper as well as Ryan Guillen, the Texas representative who wrote the attached letter and let them know your disgust!

The DRT website is: http://www.drtinfo.org/

Scott Huddleston's email address is: shuddleston@express-news.net

and the editor of the San Antonio newspaper is: editor@express-news.net

Again, apologies for off topic..

Get hold of Phil Collins, maybe he will come down and do another benefit for the Alamo! He says he is retired now, so he probably has some time on his hands!

I found out for a guy several years ago that Phil is a HUGE fan of the Alamo and has collected all sorts of things about the Alamo and has done lots of fund raising for it too. I thought that was VERY interesting!

Excellent idea James! Glenn Beck and Bill O'reilly are also huge Alamo fans so my wife will be contacting them as well.

Will post link to the actual newspaper article later today.

Here is a link to the article which Mr. Huddleston took the editorial liberty of adding the word "ppor"

http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/..._useweights=no

"A legislative panel in Austin has set a hearing to discuss the Alamo and allegations of poor stewardship by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Rep. Ryan Guillen, who leads the Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism, has asked the DRT's Alamo chairman, Virginia Van Cleave; the DRT's 26-member board; and two Alamo staff members to attend a Capitol hearing Wednesday.

In a letter Tuesday, Guillen said the panel was aware of "controversy... "

Kenny,

I used to work on Alamo Plaza. I ate my lunch many times in the Alamo's garden by the acequia.

When I search the actual Express-News for the piece you link above ("Huddleston+Alamo" and "Huddleston+DRT" and "Huddleston+Guillen"), I don't find your linked piece. What I get instead is http://www.mysanantonio.com/default/...mo-1040785.php. Hmmmmmmmm .... memory hole?

BTW, I don't think the word "poor" was an insert into Guillen's letter but rather a characterization of the nature and purpose of the hearing. Probably a correct one, too, if you read between the lines of Guillen's invitation to an ambush. Just sayin'.

Hard to gainsay the Daughters, even if they've made mistakes. Without 'em, the Alamo would be long gone. ¡Viva Adina! ¡Viva Clara!
