Check compression, if it's low you might as well pull it, clean everything and do a complete refresh.

If you have to pay someone to do it, you'll go broke.

Good luck.

I agree to do it your self is the only way to go.

If you are only going to tackle the timing belt and related parts for now leave the engine in. But if you want to deal with the various oil leaks and motor mounts it is probably a good idea to pull it and deal with everything, includign full top end refresh while you have it out.

ask your mechanic if it needs to have the intake and cam covers redone.

Do search for intake refresh it will detail all of the parts that make this job complete with the mileage if it has not been done then,
a top end refresh will run you about 2500.00 in parts if you do it yourself,
if you pay then figure about 5K price doesnt include T belt/ WP
Unless you have reason the believe the engine is needing internal work then leave the engine alone just fix all of the ancillary systems.
I dont think you need a compression test,
but a new set of Bosch copper tips WR7DC will do the trick.
If your not handy with the toolbox then you best be handy with the pen to write checks

Just the R and R of the engine is 14 hours book time as I recall, plus all the other things, now this 88 probably needs a few things done as well. But for under $11,000 ??
