94 GTS Radio/Changer
I recently had the radio and CD changer out of the car and found a few items that I have questions on. The attached pics are of the wiring in the dash and on the back of the CR-1 radio. The radio has four wire groups/connectors: antenna input, DIN plug for changer, one multi pin connector, and the fourth grouping includes two connectors, one with four pins present, and another with eight pins present, and on that same wire group is a single connector with a tag reading "security".
The first question has to do with the security connector. When I removed the radio this connector was not hooked up. However, prior to removing the radio the small red light on the face of the radio would blink when the key was removed from the ignition indicating that the security mode was active? I have reinstalled the radio without hooking this up and the red light still blinks.
The second question deals with the fourth wire group mentioned above. The connector with eight pins was not hooked up to anything. Does anyone know what this is for?
The final question on this deals with the wiring in the dash. As the picture shows, one of the wire groups there contains a multi pin connector and also a single connector with a brown wire. Again, nothing was hooked up to this brown wire. Any ideas on what it is meant for?
Thanks, Dave

If everything was working when you took it out I think I would just plug it all back in the exact same way and move along... It may well be that 911's or 968's had different connectors for one reason or another and the Porsche answer was to have the different plug types on the back of the radio just to keep them interchangeable... I have no idea. I think the light blinks anytime the car is off and I don't guess it gets power or signal of any kind from the "security" wire...gets its power from the constant on power to the radio.

The red blinkin light has to do with the radio requiring a code if power is disconnected, ie. radio removed, or battery disconnected. I assume the extra security wire is for some other security feature/option with a different car.
The Blaupunkt has connectors for different configurations of amps/speakers. One plug is for speakers, the other for an amp.

The extra disconnected brown wire is stock on the later alarm module cars. The latest implementation included both connect & disconnect triggers for the radio. One triggers when a ground connection to it it is broken the other triggers when a ground connection to it is is made. Usually the normally made connection goes to the radio shroud (that is not otherwise grounded - except though the case of the radio) the "trigger when grounded"is usually left disconected in factory implementations - and virtually nobody knows how it works so very few are configured any other way)
Both sound the horn alarm when triggered.- nothing on the radio...

On mine the brown wire was connected to the metal shelf below the radio and above the key/headlight beeper. And that has already been said, you have line level out and speaker level out of that radio on different connectors.
I noticed the whited tape on your connectors. I did something similar when I was rebuilding mine. The original foam/black sticky stuff was a pain to get off. Luckily I was wearing gloves.
That CR-1 is not that hard to disassemble. It helped when I had to polished the clear plastic. The letters on the keys clean up well with a Q tip and 409 and a magnifying glass. Take it easy though. I thought I'd fully refurbish it since I had already replaced 8 caps and retraced a few circuits. My amp died first, a cap blew then a resistor, I fixed it then the amp in the radio blew 4 caps.
Good luck

993 vs. 928-specific CR-1
Was playing with CR-1s yesterday and realized there are 2 flavors of CR-1, connectorwise. And 2 different Porsche part #'s

Hi Rob, the back of my CR-1 looks like your 993 picture with the A, B and C plugs, except that the sticker at the bottom includes the DIN connector to the amp.
Years ago I bought an adapter from Stefan at SW Stereo and finally figured out that it combines the radio-side A and B connectors in a single block.

Tom-
Interesting - is your CR-1 original to the car, or (I would bet) a dealer replacement for one that went belly up early on?

If it works, there has been a recent uptick in values for CR-1s among the 993 crowd, and yours is configured connector wise to be PnP for a 911. Might consider Ebaying it!
