Yes, I would consider $20K to be a good price if it was the car I was looking for and I planned to keep it.

^^^^^ As much as I like the GT, I wouldn't pay 20K if it needed all that work, no matter how good the interior and paint job is unless it was a GTS, remember that even though the GT is much more rarer than the GTS, it still has a lower price and the collector cars are usually the GTS models. I would say 17K is a good starting point, if your not going to keep the car don't buy it, only 911s are good investments if you want to make a profit or break even, 928 cars are hard to sell no matter what model your selling in what condition unless your selling it for pennies. Again 928s are bad investments for a car.

I know you didn't ask me, but I'll answer too. $20k would be a fair price. A relatively low-mile GT in excellent shape with up-to-date maintenance, should fetch around $25k on the low end in my opinion.

I guess in 911-ese land yacht feel translates to well-built and dated interior is a euphemysim for most functional, un-cluttered, ergonomically perfect, timeless interior layout ever put in a Porsche or any other high-end GT.

I paid $23K for mine back in '08. It had 50K on it, and while not one owner nor perfect, it was well cared for and the TB/WP and clutch were only 5K old, it had basically brand new CIIIs on it and came with a set of Boge Red sports in a box.

Of course, since then, I've put 20K on it, replaced a pranged and leaking front oil cooler, the LH, steering rack, MMs, fuel and most water hoses, and am currently in the process of swapping out the cam gears and all the rest that goes along with that. This list doesn't include all the other miscellaneous stuff here and there.

So Worf's $30K estimate is just about spot on...

Being that these are my first few posts on the 928 board, I have to say rennlist across the board is such a great place. Thank you all for the informed responses. My comments on the interior and handling of the car were in no way disparaging, the car looks and drives exactly as it was designed. It just spoke '1980's to me, yet at the same time surprised me pleasantly with its driveability. I love how they are a rare sight, and how they were designed to be the new flagship of the marque. I remember how cool I thought they were when I was a kid and seeing the first one.

A little trivia for you all as well....in 1981 a 928 driven by David Morse won the U.S. ExperssU.S. Express (sucessor race to Cannonball Run) and recorded the second fastest time in 1983, a record I broke in 2006 a record which I broke in a BMW in 2006 So chalk that up as one more reason I wouldn't mind having it in the stable.

While my post count may be 930, I have had a few of those in my past too. One with a tragic end that I walked away from with a bruise on leg.

I paid 17.5K for a '90GT with 108K miles in 2006, I have done intake, motor mounts, Porkensioner/cam gears, new shocks/springs, A/C repairs, and wheels and tires. I'm at about $30K on that car. Cheap for 5 years of driving pleasure, wrenching, and cameraderie. And the wife says I can't sell it until I'm not underwater on it. Ok.

That mirrors my experience too. Paid $15k (guy didn't know what he had) in 2006 w/ 123k miles. I have redone everything and add a bunch more. Probably $40k into it now. SOOOOOooooo much fun! Worth almost every penny.

Multiply by the current WCR (wife conversion rate) of .35 you have 14k into the car. THAT would be my story!

For $20k, I'd want the AC system right, they can get expensive and time consuming to fix if the problems lay under the dash or it has rear air and needs new lines. TB/WP, tires, and fluid changes are easy fixes.

I don't know to which David you refer but, I'll throw in my 928 cents:

Maintenance gets more expensive when you have to re-repair or fix something that was screwed up by a previous technician. Very few 928s I see do not need remedial work. I have seen some really stupid crap done in the name of maintenance to these cars.

So.... I would rather pay $20k for a 50k-mile GT that was almost-completely untouched than pay $15K (or 25k) for a GT with extensive maintenance of dubious origin. This is where a PPI is essential. If my '91 disappeared and I was going to buy another '91, I would not hesitate to pay $20k if a PPI - done by me - indicated that it hadn't been touched previously by monkeys but was in otherwise needs-the-20-year-maintenance condition with 50k-miles.

Put it in Wilhoit's hands, and he will sell it for $25K, and quick too

Dave M, that 930 looks like a "boost moved that pole right into me" job....lucky you were OK!
And...32hrs is quite a feat..
As for the 928- its the only Porsche I've kept for 16 yrs, but I wouldn't mind a GT3RS alongside it..
A clean GT is very unusual car, and I agree that 17 is a good price.
Welcome to the 928 site!

Even Willhoit would have to spend money to catch up maintenance.

My only hope is that this car will go into the hands of someone who truly appreciates it. This car is much more rare and desirable than some people realize. If it had a rogerbox, I'd want to buy it for myself.
