My 87 928 S 4 has just started to suddenly accelerate and continue to accelerate, starting slowly, then getting faster and faster..scared the s**t out of me this morning, so much so that I immediately pulled over and left it on the side of the road. Any ideas on this and any recommendations for a good 928 mechanic in ATLANTA.
Thanks so much.....heading back now to start her up and somehow get her home....lol

Were you on cruise control? Is your floor mat bunched up around the petals? I have never heard of this kind of event in a 928, and I have been monitoring these forums for about 3 or 4 years. Maybe we should do a search? Jerry Feather

I've heard of this happening but it usually is not a gradual thing. The throttle cable gets frayed and sticks at what ever position the foot had it at.

At least for a short period of time the brakes can always overpower the engine. Oh yeah, theres always neutral and/or kill the ignition... just be prepared not to have power assisted brakes or steering.
There is no electronic throttle control, so if you are experiencing unintended acceleration something is mechanically sticking. First guess would be floor mat, second would be one of the cables.

and one last thing...could this issue (look like cruise control or cable issue) be one reason why my 87 is a dog from 0 to 30...i understand they are geared for high speed, but i don't have much acceleration from 0 to 30. i guess the mercedes-benz 4 speed tranny is just built that way.

Good point Greg, had one a few years ago that when the cruise unit was unplugged and the vac stayed attached it would do some weird crap.

Plan on spending some time asking Greg questions, and checking your car over with him. This will be a huge learning experience for you, and one of the best things that you can do. It will be worth whatever he charges you! The charges will be fair, but remember that he makes his living doing this...
