Robert,

Have you called Hector, Bruce or Albert? I bet they can help you. You could also call Jones' they can probably tell you where they send cars or if they do them there.

You can't go wrong with that till you have worn out the inside edges of your tires in about 1500 miles and then have to replace them because they didn't do it right... Anyone doing a 928 Alignment for $50 is either losing money left right and center or is CLUELESS! I don't think it is even close to possible to do one in under 2 hours and the tech MUST, MUST, MUST go back and forth and check each and every measurement after they make ANY changes to ANY other settings. These cars are extremely sophisticated and difficult for even a good tech to align properly.

I look forward to your report in about 2-3 months time...

Risaac,

I have to agree w James.

Be leary about anyone saying they can actually align a 928, especially at a discount shop.
Ask Rog100 about the last 2 alignments he had at a shop like that.
Tires=FUBAR!!

I'm not saying it can't be done, but you have to go in there and actually train them on NOT lifting the car, etc, etc.

Pretty sure that Jone Autowerks in San Antonio is the Place to go if you have a 928.
Again, Albert's gorgeous 88 has been maintained by them over the years.

The last alignment I had done, the tech spent 3 hours on it. Took me under the car, showed me what he would do, showed me what he did after it. This guy's only job is alignment and road force balancing tires.

If he they did align the car properly for you, that is awesome!! You just found a great value. IF not, ask the San Antonio gang or go by Jones as they have a pretty good reputation based on the 928 folks that have been there.

I usually spend the best part of a morning doing mine, but that typically includes at least two "settling" runs through the local speed-bump circuit. Every adjustment has multiple consequences as other point out. If a tech says he will just adjust this then that and then that last thing, you'll see the results in a short while. It's unfortunate that cars that aren't done just right still seem to drive OK. The setup is so sensitive that I've given up on the local commercial places, the ones that want to get the cars in and out in xx minutesno matter what. Those places generally make their money by 'discovering' parts that are worn/damaged/whatever and need replacement. Alignment business is not a direct profit center, that's for sure. When you roll in and tell them they can't lift the car to inspect for things they might need to sell you, and that you'll do any needed parts replacement yourself if there is something worn, you are almost certainly doomed to the fast in-and-out treatment. There are exceptions, particularly performance places, but those are also the places us cheapskates tend to avoid because of the high costs. But a correct alignment at $300 is cheaper than a poor one at $50, considering the easily several $hundred in collateral tire damage that too often gets bundled in the deal for you.

Robert - I sent you an e-mail. I had the GTS done at Jones about 2 years ago--I think it was around $100. If you want it up to factory height, lower; or, you're happy where it is, let them know when you drop off your car. They're great people and really support the local Porsche gang. That aside, I'm thinking about Sears next time I need an alignment.

Chuck,

Thanks for the info. I am new to the TX area and live about 50 min. West of San Antonio. Looks like a steering rack job is in the near future for me and I will be needing an alignment.
Thanks

David,

Can you send me an email... (if you like anyway). We have a 2nd Saturday gathering here in Austin and we have a regular group of SA owners who join us. Love to have you too! 928 Owners Club sponsors the event and if you guys have not joined the 928OC I would like to invite you to do so! I thought Hunt was quite a bit more than 50 min West of SA btw...isn't Hunt past Ingram?!

Thanks guys for the feedback. I called JonesAutoWerks and they wanted to charge me 275.00....I feel out of my chair....

I trust you all ... I will go Jones Autowerks after I get my new tires....
If you recall I bought the car sight unseen from the 2nd owner of the car out of Sacramento and drove it home to San Antonio.

The tires are just over a year old and have shown significant signs of wear on the inside. So after I get the tires replaced I will spend the 275.00 for a dam alignment ... ugghhh... $$$$$$

We have a good place here in Austin that charges like $150. They handle many race cars and understand the 928. They have done my cars in the past. A bit over half but if you could set up an appt with them for say a 2nd Sat you could probably drop the car off before lunch, get a ride over to wherever we are doing lunch and then go pick it up after and be good to go for a bit over half what Jones wants for the job.
