Default 490 Hi-Fi sound system

what does option 490 Hi-Fi sound system consist of?

Speakers only, or are there amps hidden somewhere?

Anything special to consider when connecting a new head unit?

You might find an amp under the cover where the hatch release button is on the passenger side.

I think all 928's (at least later ones) came with this option standard.... You will find a little 80w amp under the cover near the passenger seat towards the door

Gruffalo - on pre'89 cars, it means the car came with 8 speakers - two in each door, a woofer behind each seat, and one on each side of the rear hatch. The car would also have come with an amplifier under the cover by the passenger seat. From memory its a 60W amp.

Brian - I have an '87 that did not come with the hifi option. However it is unusual, and I suspect the car was specifically ordered without it, rather than it being an option other buyers actually chose.

It has the same perforated door panels and hidden 4 speakers as the early cars. Interestingly, it has the hifi-option harness with all the DIN connectors under the passenger cover, and a special extra harness which connects all the DIN connectors so that the speakers are wired from that point.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good aftermarket amp for the 8 speaker system, and where to put it? What would be the best watt size and how many channels should I look for? I prefer a smaller amp but good qaulity. I just want a clean and even amplified sound. I will be using a 200 watt head.

I've been looking into this too.

Sadly, I've yet to find anything that will fit in the stock location and provide at least 4 channels.

The closest I've come up with is possibly extending the passenger side cover's length (using fiberglass and new carpet) and using a long narrow 4-channel amp, like the Arc KS 125.4 Mini (which is only 5 inches wide), to power the factory speaker locations. Then if I decide to, later I can bridge two channels to run a sub, and use the head unit to power the door speakers.

Otherwise, its fit something larger in a non-stock location, but I'd prefer not to have an amp mounted on top of an interior surface, nor in the spare wheel well (I carry stuff like puncture repair kit, compressor etc. in there - here in Oz a spirited drive will easily put you 3+ hours from a tow truck).

That was standard setup for some LHD ROW markets in '87 MY. M490 did cost extra same way like M454 cruise control which also became standard next MY I believe.

Try search for "Dr Audio"

I saw a thread last week that was a really cool build.

My car has the 10 speaker option

I installed all new speakers, deck, amp and sub
