Tarmac Rallying in Ireland - Yesterday !
+Have just come back from two days rallying on closed public small roads in Southern Ireland (Galway)
Someone sent me attached Youtube clip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE2p3tq4d-I
Hope the link works !
We had a camera in the car and another on the front of the bonnet - very dramatic pictures ... but these will take a while to sort out and upload .. meantime enjoy the outside view

I have driven in many TSD rallies (unfortunately, very few on closed roads, none overseas), road races in several types of vehicles, oval racing on dirt, and salt flat record runs. I think that rallies are the most fun of all...

To answer the "how did you do ?" question ... not bad , there were 17 historic cars (only 50 in the main field compared to 150 in previous years ) .. and we finished 4th overall - from memory about 12 cars finished the event (95 stage miles - over two days)
Interesting that at least two drivers flew in from various parts of USA to take part !!!
If you liked that (and the noise) ... you will kill for the bonnet cam stuff !!

Hopefully , inside camera and bonnet cam footage should be posted in a few days ... I can't wait either. What I saw was run directly off tape onto a TV screen - sorting and uploading is very slow as the file sizes are really big. Hopefully will be a mix of inside stuff and outside ... on the other hand may be two seperate files ....... have to wait !!!!

It's adrenaline pumping fun like no other ... but ... you need to take some brave pills and have a bulletproof car before you go rallying. I've navigated at State championship level and gave it up after going off a mountainside forestry road, in the dark, in mud and snow, at 100mph ... and survived. I decided circuit racing was way safer, and I'd prefer to be in charge of steering and the go and stop pedals, and tore the maps up and threw them out the window there and then.

I built up an old Eagle Talon TSi AWD to rally with and attack the Pikes Peak hill climb about 12 years ago. Unfortunately a family emergency forced the sale of the project at about 80% complete. I would love to try again.

Very cool! Looks like an absolute blast. Thanks for sharing.
Please excuse my ignorance but what is the advantage of running narrow/high profile tires? Regulation size?

Tyres .... no advantage ... in fact probably the opposite. Regulations say that to compete , we must use a 70 series tyre , and the choice in competition tyres , 15" with that profile is VERY limited.
Now ... the good news , in car (coupled with bonnet cam in the corner of the screen) is up on you tube
link I will try and put in below:

Note the nice clean tarmac , (cough) , no potholes , gravel , or puddles ... approx.
this stage near the start , shows the corner filmed in the clip posted at the start ..... outside is better I think !
