After a couple of weeks of trying to start it I went by a Motorworks here in Winston where they work on Porsche's. I talked to the guy that knows CIS named Bill. He told me how to verify timing not 180 out and if I was worried about compression to put some oil in the plug holes and try to start. Well I did that and IT STARTED AND RAN FOR ABOUT 20 SECONDS. It sounded really smooth but tons of smoke. I tried to restart and got nothing so I pulled the plugs and they were covered with oil. I am going to clean them and try again. I don't think it's getting any fuel possibly due to settings and low initial fuel pressure. No gauges do I own. If it won't start after the plug cleaning I'll check the plugs and if they are clean I'll add some more oil to the plug holes to get some compression. I am down to compression and fuel. I am going to try and keep it running this time by spritzing. Gunar

You know with this comment....."No gauges do I own. " You appear to ask for advice but refuse to take it ! With no pressure readings you have no way to know what the CIS is doing either buy a couple gauges or take it to a shop and pay them to check it out. Other option is buy a rebuilt fuel dist. , rebuilt control pressure reg and 8 new injectors but even then you should have the gauges to confirm pressure.

I would love to have a gauge set and I am in the process of looking for an affordable one. I know I'll need it to dial it in but thought I could at least get the car started for a bit without the fuel pressure gauge. I respect your input very much and thank you for taking the time to give it. I need all the help I can get but still have to filter through it. Gunar

If oil in the cylinders made it fire instantly you have compression issues. The oil sealed the rings long enough to give you the 20 seconds of run time, then once it was all burned/blown out it quit.

Yeah- I'm afraid this is a possibility. I am holding on to the comment someone made that if an engine has sat for years it could show low compression and still be alright once it was run some. I don't know if this is true.

You'll also find it handy to get a copy of How to Tune and Modify Bosch Fuel Injection

Roger also sells the gauge set - not sure on his price tho'.

As for the possible compression issue - its unlikely that compression will be bad in all cylinders; I'd expect the engine to start and run if it were just one or possibly two cylinders with a sealing issue. Before you start chasing ghosts, verify that the CIS is working correctly (i.e. use a gauge set). You need to start eliminating possible causes of no-start before making assumptions and spending money unnecessarily.

I won't do anything drastic like pull the engine and change the rings just yet.

I can get it started if I add oil to the cylinders through the plug holes and clean the plugs off. It starts on the first hit and I can run it as long as I want as long as I don't let the idle fall too low then it dies fast and won't restart unless I pull the plugs and add more oil in the cylinders. This is quite inconvenient. I plan on starting it again and running it for about 30 minutes or till 9 gallons of fuel is gone and see if that helps seal the rings. If this doesn't work it looks like I need to just change the rings. Mixed emotions here. Gunar
